An Introduction to my pulse blog

Sustainability

Hi. I’m Chris Wright and I’d like to welcome you to this Ethical Junction Blog. My aim is to initiate a debate about how we can encourage a new way of looking at decisions we take every day. For example, we’re beginning to understand how small actions taken by individuals in sufficient numbers can have big, negative consequences. Paving front gardens to provide off-street parking, for example, reduces the neighbourhood’s overall ability to absorb rainwater, which puts additional pressure on the drainage system and leads ultimately to flooding. Yet people go on doing it because the rise of the second car makes it increasingly difficult to park outside one’s own house.

That’s an example of a vicious circle. We need to adopt a frame of reference that makes it easier to take steps that will to make life more sustainable and which, in turn, will then lead on to other, positive actions, creating a virtuous circle in the process.

I am a director and founder member of Action for Sustainable Living (www.afsl.org.uk) and my interest in environmental issues stems from as long ago as the Ecologist’s Blueprint for Survival in 1972. That ground-breaking document set me on a path of discovery about the way the planet and its inhabitants relate to one another. Along the way I have published five books. ‘Your Wake Up Call’ is the latest and it considers many fundamental issues about the dangerously unsustainable way most of us in the developed world are living.

I hope that you will find what I have to say thought provoking and that you will want to contribute ideas and comments of your own………
