Greener Food & Drink

Roughly one third of our carbon emissions result from food and drink production and consumption. The connection between our diets and the size of our carbon footprint is becoming clearer as more research is carried out. For example, according to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation’s report ‘Livestock’s Long Shadow’ (Nov 2006) the meat and dairy industry is responsble for around 18% of global carbon emissions compared to transport’s 13.5%.

The government has set up an interesting new website to provide more information about food, environmental impact and lifestyle issues. Go to www.direct.gov.uk/greenerfood to have a look…..

  1. Maureen Pickford Says:

I am a long-term vegetarian, but have been reading recently about the reliance of other creatures on the animals we rear for meat and dairy. For example, certain insects that provide food for swallows, breed on cow pats. Does this mean no cows, no swallows?
