Nestle controversy over Labour Party Fringe Meetings

Campaigners say its sponsorship of fringe meetings on obesity and
water at the current Labour Party Conference is part of its strategy
to divert attention from these issues and the on-going concern about
its aggressive marketing of baby foods. Nestlé is facing criticism
over the impact of its food marketing, particularly that targeting
children, on diet and obesity and environmental damage caused by water
bottling operations.

Nestlé is one of the four most boycotted companies on the planet
because of its aggressive marketing of baby foods, according to an
independent survey. Nestlé´s Global Public Affairs Manager admitted
earlier this year that Nestlé is ‘widely boycotted’.

Mike Brady, Campaigns and Networking Coordinator at Baby Milk Action,
said:

"Nestlé’s response to criticism is to open its cheque book to try to
divert it, an approach that often causes it further embarassment. Let
us hope the new Chief Executive Officer announced this week and due to
take up his post in April, will change company strategy and take
action to reduce the harm the company causes to people and the
environment."
