Herne Hill is the hub for pioneering Fair Trade Success

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

A
pioneering company, which has helped changed the lives of thousands
of smallholder farmers in Africa and Asia, owes much of its success
to its local roots in Herne Hill. Kate
Sebag, Marketing Director of Tropical Wholefoods, is marking World
Fairtrade Day (May 9 2009) by paying tribute to the support she has
received from local companies and businesses in the Herne Hill and
Dulwich areas.

Tropical
Wholefoods, which is based in Herne Hill, is an importer and
distributor of fair trade dried fruits, dried mushrooms, nuts and
fruit bars. It supplies health food, delicatessens, farm shops,
Oxfam, Morrisons and  Boots with its produce. The company
pioneered sun dried fruit which it first brought to the UK over 15
years ago.
 Then the company had a
turnover of £15,000 but this has now reached £2.5million and Kate
is hopeful of a flourishing year despite these difficult economic
times.
 She says: “The support and
help we have received from local businesses and people has been
wonderful. This has really helped us in lots of ways not least in
getting our products well known in our community.”
 One
example is when she called on local businesses to help when she
wanted to set up a photoshoot to show off new recipes using her
products.
 She says: “I decided to
make up several recipes to show the range and versatility of the
products I sell. I am quite a good cook but I asked my local baker
for help with a batch of hot cross buns with a twist – using our
Fairtrade dried apricot and mango instead of currants. The baker made
them for me free of charge – and they were delicious!”
 As
well as the buns, Kate needed to source plates and dishes to display
the freshly cooked dishes, plus she needed extra ingredients and
‘props’ such as flowers.
 Again,
local businesses triumphed.
 The list
of helpful businesses includes:
 - Hot
Cross Buns were cooked by Kindred Bakery, 23 Half Moon Lane, London
SE24 9JU- Lamb for a tagine recipe was supplied by local butcher,
Walters on 321 Railton Road London SE24 OJN- Fruit and Vegetables
were bought from The Fruit Garden, 315 Railton Road.- Spices, flour,
sugar  and other products came from Londis at 14 Half Moon Lane,
London SE24 9HU- Moroccan Crockery lent by Mimosa, 16 Half Moon Lane,
London SE24 9HU- Ribbons were supplied by The Art Stationers, 31
Dulwich Village, London SE21 7BN- Flowers came from The Flower Lady,
297 Railton Road, next to Herne Hill Station- Even the light bulb for
the lighting came from RJ Electrical Supplies, 165 Herne Hill, London
SE24 9LR
Kate adds: “It all goes to
show what a fantastic area Herne Hill and Dulwich is – everything is
within walking distance and everything was provided with local
friendliness and helpfulness.
 “My
husband, Adam, and I have lived and worked in Southwark for more than
10 years and have lived and worked in neighbouring Lambeth for more
than 15 years. We brought up our children here. We always knew it was
a great area and this just goes to show how brilliant local community
can be.”
 Tropical Wholefoods
products are also popular in the local area.
 The
local Oxfam store 20 Half Moon Lane stocks
Tropical Wholefoods products, local school Rosendale Primary has run
healthy eating days and days on Fairtrade when all the kids have
scoffed dried mango from the company and invited Kate in to talk
about her visits to Burkina Faso.
 The
fresh fruit and veg shop, the Fruit Garden on Railton Road, stocks
Tropical Wholefoods bars, as does the local chemist Fourways Pharmacy
on 12 Half Moon Lane. Londis on Half Moon Lane also stock Tropical
Wholefoods fruits and bars.
 And every
summer the company takes a stall at Lambeth Country Show in Brockwell
Park.
 Kate adds: “We’re
always reading about the lack of neighbourly spirit in the UK today
and how unfriendly Londoners are but down here we are proof that the
opposite is true.”

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

This
Christian
Aid Week
, 10 to 16 May, 300,000
volunteers will pound the pavements of the UK distributing thirteen
million red envelopes and helping to raise £15m for poor communities
in the developing world. Thousands of fundraising events will take
place throughout the week, from the charity’s nationwide
fundraising event QUIZAID
to quirky local initiatives like the 61 year old vicar from Brackley
who will be joining a group of leathered bikers on a sponsored road
run.  If
you haven’t got involved yet, there’s still time! QUIZAID
 - supported this year by soap star Kara Tointon – is taking
place up and down the country, in living rooms, pubs, community halls
and churches, and hopes to raise around £225,000. To find your
nearest QUIZAID
event or local fundraiser this Christian Aid Week log on to
www.caweek.org
and type in your postcode. Or if you’d simply like to make a
donation go to
www.caweek.org
On her return from a trip in
Zambia with Christian Aid, Kara said: ‘‘it’s really important
to get involved and get quizzing this Christian Aid Week. It doesn’t’
cost much to enter but it can make a huge difference. Having seen
some of Christian Aid’s work myself in Zambia,
where I saw children who have been orphaned by HIV given homes and
care, I know how vital this money is.’

Calling All Hay Fever Sufferers

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Experts are warning hay
fever sufferers that this summer will see an unusually high pollen
count likely to last for months. While most people welcome the news
that this year the English summer will be blessed with hot and sunny
days, the 12 million people in the UK who suffer from hay fever will
no doubt be less than happy with the prospect of long months of
sneezing, itchy eyes, runny noses and sleepless nights.

Beverley
Adams-Groom, of the National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit at
Worcester University, said: “Most hay fever seasons are pretty bad
these days because the grass and the trees tend to get the optimum
conditions for growth and pollen production. We have certainly
noticed that over the last 13 to 14 years there has been a steady
increase in the severity of the seasons. We assume it is down to
climate change. The hay fever season is also definitely longer. If we
have a hot dry summer, the season will be over by early or mid-July,
but these days it can go on until mid-August.” Unfortunately
anyone can develop hay fever at any stage of their life, regardless
of a previous proclivity to the allergy. There are of course many
over-the-counter hay fever remedies which some sufferers find helpful
in easing their symptoms, but an increasing number of sufferers are
turning to all natural and organic treatments. One such natural
remedy is the herb butterbur which is thought to work in a similar
way to allergy medications in blocking the action of histamine in
allergic reactions. Another natural strategy for easing the symptoms
of hay fever is through dietary adaptation. Quercetin is an
antioxidant that belongs to a class of water-soluble plant substances
called flavonoids and is thought to prevent the release of histamine.
Although you can buy Quercetin in supplement form, it is found
naturally in foods such as apples (with the skin on), berries, red
grapes, red onions and capers. Carotenoids (found in apricots,
carrots, pumpkin and kale) help to decrease inflammation in the
airways and Omega-3 fatty acids have been found to reduce the
production of inflammatory chemicals, both of which could help ease
hay fever symptomsSo hay fever sufferers take heart, there are ways
to cope with your allergy this summer without having to turn to
chemical products. Once you’ve bought your Quercetin supplements
from your local natural food supplement shop and increased the
carotenoids and Omega-3 fatty acids in your diet, make sure you
consider how allergenic-resistant your home is. Extend a natural,
chemical-free approach to your home and you could find all sorts of
allergies are eased. You’ll also be able to have a restorative
night’s sleep in a natural environment, helping you to enjoy the
long hot summer days and nights rather than dread them. Find out more
about how our chemical-free products can help allergy sufferers by

Furniture on the Street

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

When Hitesh Bedia, 32, suffered a horrific accident that crushed his leg and left him unable to walk, the usually active father of a young child found himself incapacitated and out of work…

After narrowly escaping an amputation and spending a year laid up, Bedia decided it was time to take a new direction in his life. So he signed up to Furniture on the Street (FoS), a social enterprise in Tower Hamlets, east London, which supplies local authorities, charities and other clients with contemporary-designed pieces of outdoor wooden furniture.

Ethical Shoppers Demand Proof of Integrity

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

A new report, out today, shows that discriminating customers now insist on more evidence of the integrity of so-called ethical companies touting for their business.

I’d say this is entirely reasonable – I certainly would like to know that my hard-earned folding stuff is being well spent – especially in these days of cash constraint.

Also, if we can’t expect high standards of integrity in the ethical marketplace, where can we expect them?

The report shows that one feature now held in high esteem is validation of a trader’s credentials by a transparent, non-profit, professional organisation that is well-establised and trusted in the marketplace. I swear I heard about just such an outfit only the other day…

You can read about the report here: http://www.environmentalleader.com/2009/05/05/lohas-consumers-want-proof-and-third-party-verification/

Enjoy :)

Ethical Shoppers Demand Proof of Integrity

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

A report, out today, shows that discriminating customers are demanding more convincing proof of the integrity of companies touting for their business. It makes a lot of sense to me – in times of cash constraint, I, for one, want to know more than ever that I am spending my hard-earned folding stuff optimally.

Also, if we can’t expect high standards and integrity in the ethical marketplace, where can we expect them?

Yet, it appears, there are many charlatans out there trading on the naïveté of starry-eyed do-gooders. Good do-ers, I suspect, would never get caught by these cowboys.

Oh, and it says in the report that one of the best indicators of a genuinely ethical trader is the seal of approval of of a transparent, independent, non-profit, specialist organisation that is trusted in the marketplace. I swear I heard of one of those just the other day…

You can see the report here. Enjoy:
