Is Birmingham the centre of green business?
The
marketing industry’s Green AwardsTM is once again on the hunt for
Britain’s greenest business and with last year’s award for Best Green
Packaging going to one of Birmingham’s biggest names, Cadbury, the
organisers are putting a special call out to all businesses in the
region to prove that the West Midlands is ahead of the game when it
comes to green business.
Launched
in 2006, the Green AwardsTM were set up to recognise and reward creative
work that communicates the importance of Corporate Social
Responsibility, sustainable development and ethical best practice in
any sector, in any marketing discipline. The Awards attract entries
from large companies and organisations that have embarked on big budget
environmental campaigns as well as from small businesses and
individuals who get their message across using their own resources and
ingenuity.
Cadbury
took the Best Green Packaging award for its foil-wrapped Eco Easter
eggs at the Green Awards in November 2008. The ‘Treasure’ eggs used the
minimum of packaging materials. They were simply foil-wrapped and sold
in a ‘retail-ready’ tray. This enabled the eggs to be displayed
directly on to the retail shelves without the need for further handling
or a secondary shop display.
Cadbury
says it reduced use of plastic by 247 tonnes and cardboard by 115
tonnes in 2008. The company has pledged to cut the packaging for its
seasonal products by a quarter by 2010. This year, the Green Awards
hopes to see more businesses of all sizes from the West Midlands
shouting about the ingenious and innovative green campaigns they are
running.
Founder
and organiser of the awards, Iain Patton said: “We know that there are
companies who are involved in some great environmental schemes and
projects in the West Midlands and we would like to encourage them to
enter. The fact that Cadbury got involved last year demonstrates the
high esteem in which the Awards are held in the industry and its
success last year will hopefully spur its neighbours in the region
along to get involved.”
There
are 16 categories in total and the deadline for entries is Friday 18th
September with the Green AwardsTM reception taking place on Wednesday 25th November in London where the winners will be announced. The event
will be free to attend for shortlisted entrants.
