Up to 98% of cyclists not adequately insured

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Five million regular cyclists may be putting themselves and others at risk because they do not have basic third party cover, according to research by cycle insurance provider ilovemybike.co.uk

Director at ilovemybike.co.uk, Andrew Davis said: “It’s risky for a cyclist to assume that their household insurance policy will cover road traffic collisions, as many do not.”

“Third party insurance is compulsory for motorists, but we know of only two per cent of regular cyclists who have insurance that would pay out if they caused damage to a person or property.

Exhibition in Norwich

Monday, July 27th, 2009

There are many reasons to visit
Norwich (we have a lot of EJ members in and around that area), if you
do get the chance to go there in the next month or so please look out
for our EJ admin person Kate Corder’s artwork which is part of the
art exhibition East International
taking place at NUCA on
Saint George’s Street. Her work in the exhibition is on Tolhurst
‘stockfree’ vegan organic vegetable growers, a 12-month film
study about the growing seasons and biodiversity of a growing year.
Kate also has two large planters outside in the street that reflect
her video work and contain vegetable plants and companion planting
for public consumption. Norwich City Council worked with Kate and
took the initiative to plant beans and tomato plants amongst their
floral displays at the Assembly House and also on the balconies of
the City Hall (take a telescope to see these!).

The
exhibition is open to the public

Open
Monday to Saturday 10-5pm until Saturday 22 August

Save money and the planet with Eco Concierge

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Take the hassle out of living a greener and more sustainable lifestyle

Eco Concierge, launched today, is offering a new green lifestyle
service, helping people live in a more sustainable and eco-friendly
way.  The new service gives consumers expert advice and assistance on
making the right green and ethical choices, helping people to save
time, money and the planet.

As part of the new service, Eco Concierge lifestyle managers meet with clients and help them create and deliver an action plan that reduces their environmental impact in a way that fits with their lifestyle, values and priorities.   This can range from a complete lifestyle review covering home, shopping and travel, to advice on one off events such as organising a green wedding, an eco holiday or environmentally friendly building renovation.

After calculating their current ecological footprint, Eco Concierge gives clients a free quote outlining the environmental and financial savings they could make by becoming greener.  Clients are then supported with practical input and new ideas including making green choices, researching and project managing the best eco suppliers and negotiating discounts on a wide range of environmentally friendly products and services.

Kirsten Jack, founder of Eco Concierge says, “I set up this company because I know people want to do the right thing, they are just very busy and don’t get round to doing all the things they’d like to do. Armed with the right information and encouragement, our clients are able to make changes that bring new ideas into their lives, help the environment and save money.”

Eco Concierge has the tools to make a quick but thorough analysis of clients’ personal values, motivations and current eco behaviours.  This means that each service is uniquely tailored to be both motivating and accessible for clients.

Eco Concierge draws on a considerable pool of expertise in finding the right information, products and services for clients at discounted prices.  Lifestyle management packages start from £25 a month; a full lifestyle overhaul is £199. For more information or to request a free quote, customers can visit www.ecoconcierge.org or get in touch with Kirsten@ecoconcierge.org or call 07505 480903.

Notes to editors

There are three main services, with all clients offered a free quote and a starter pack with freebies and discounts specifically relevant to them. The Quick Fix service is a ‘lifestyle overhaul’ and costs £199.  A bespoke solution is designed that delivers the footprint changes the client is interested in and shows the total money and planets saved.

The One Planet Living service is a monthly drop in support service to helping clients at busy points in their year, for £25 a month. This could include helping to organise a child’s birthday party, helping with ethical investment decisions or booking a summer holiday.

Conscious Living is a service for busy people who know what they want and simply need support to make it happen.  It may be a low impact home renovation, a gift for a busy person, or help to make your garden a wildlife haven.  The service is charged on an hourly rate of £35, with reductions for longer jobs.

The initial free consultation takes a maximum of 30 minutes and can be done face to face or virtually. A follow consultation on booking to understand clients’ needs normally takes approximately 90 minutes. From there, the client chooses how much they want to be involved in tracking actions taken on their behalf – Eco Concierge can offer detailed information about the reasons behind their decisions or they can simply get on with delivering the actions – depending on the client’s preference.

Eco Concierge aims to do well by doing good and takes its own sustainable operation as well as its support of individuals and businesses seriously. Its mission is to have a net positive effect on the world and to be authentic, honest, transparent and fair.

Kirsten Jack has a relevant MSc and is an Associate of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment.  She has seven years experience working in the environment sector – across business, charity and government sectors in the UK and internationally.

Children Need To Knock Ed’s Policy Together

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Children can learn more through practical fun than textbooks. The
launch of educational games kits to demonstrate renewable energy will
provide children with the start that could simultaneously address two
new government objectives. Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children,
Schools and Families, is determined to improve educational standards
and also wants parents to take a more practical involvement in the
schooling process.

Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for the Department of Energy and Climate Change, wants UK homes to concentrate on renewable energy to have virtually no carbon emissions by 2050. Ultimately passing the responsibility to our children we need to make sure their education includes practical experience of renewable energy to help meet this laudable objective.

Children need to see renewable energy devices in action and understand how efficient and essential these are for the future. Introducing them to alternative energy sources will fire their interest and commitment to both Ed’s policies.

The educational games website www.keen2learn.co.uk has just introduced a new range dedicated to renewable energy. Already selling a comprehensive range of educational games to schools and parents in support of the National Curriculum, the new energy resource games allow children to see wind, solar and fuel cell power in action.

Alistair Owens, managing director of keen2learn, explained, “These educational games kits give children first hand fun experience in seeing how a wind turbine or solar photovoltaic cell works. The kits are supplied with measuring equipment and worksheets to follow a variety of experiments”.

The renewable energy kits are not toys and need adult supervision making them ideal as a teaching resource in school, at home with parents or as a central theme through local councils or energy associations.

Juice, sprout & filter your way to a healthier life with Energise Your Life at the Natural & Organic Products Show this April

Top trade and domestic suppliers of top quality health-related food
processing equipment, Energise Your Life, will be helping support
Britain’s natural products trade this April at the Natural &
Organic Products show at London’s Olympia.

Taking place on 5 and 6 April, acclaimed health-promoting website
Energise Your Life will be displaying a host
of quality equipment including juicers, sprouters, distillers,
dehydrators and other products.

With on-hand expert advice, the machines themselves and plenty of health advice, the company is looking forward to a large turn-out for the show, which has been running for over 13 years as the UK’s number one retail and distribution event for the natural and organic sectors, and is by far the country’s largest trade show for natural and organic products.

Energise Your Life (stand 7036) will be showcasing their market leading branded machines including their top sellers:

Samson 6-in-1 Juicer (£169) -  Awarded Best Buy Masticating Juicer by Which? Magazine and scoring top marks in all categories.  The Samson juices fruits and vegetables as well as wheatgrass, and can be used for making icecream, pasta, dips, noodles, nut butters and sorbets.

Solo Star II Juicer (£225) has shown in tests to produce over 20% more juice than the Oscar Vitalmax, and since its recent introduction into the UK is proving to be a best seller amongst juiceaholics!

Waterwise Water Distiller (£249) – This compact, portable distiller provides fresh, homemade distilled water and is great for travel as well as home use, and is a firm favourite with Peace Corps Volunteers and holiday home owners – it requires no installation, assembly or hookups and is lightweight and highly portable.

EasyGreen MikroFarm Sprouter (£149) – we think this is the simplest, most efficient table top sprouter in existence – using only seeds, oxygen (the key ingredient in growing sprouts!) and water the resulting sprouts stay freshly watered and oxygenated, ensuring no mould growth and only the freshest, healthiest greens for everyday consumption.  Energise Your Life are the exclusive distributors in the UK and Ireland for the EasyGreen MikroFarm.

Aquasana Water Filter (£89.95) – the No. 1 rated home water filtration system in America, works better & costs less than any other brand!   This patented twin-cartridge drinking water filter installs in seconds to standard kitchen taps and provides up to 30 gallons an hour of ultra-filtered high quality water for drinking, cooking and other beverages.  Costs work out at  2p a litre / £6.25 a month for a virtually unlimited supply of “healthy water”.  The Energise Your Life website includes an easy installation video link.

Excalibur 4-Tray Dehydrator (£179) – Securing top ratings from Energise Your Life, this world class dehydrator is the model preferred by most people in the raw food community.  Excalibur dehydrators uses a temperature controlled, fan forced, horizontal drying system mounted in the rear. Cool air is drawn in the back, heated and distributed evenly across each tray. During the dehydration process, warm air removes moisture from foods and is pushed out of the front of the machine.  The dehydrator is acclaimed by many well-known leaders in the raw food community including Victorias Kulvinskas, Gabriel Cousins, Cherie Soria and Victoria Boutenko.

The Energise Your Life site is bursting with health-related products as well as advice, price and performance comparison guides, demo videos, useful information and the company offers a delivery service second to none.

BrightKidz Celebrates Five Years Keeping Children Safe

Social enterprise BrightKidz celebrated its fifth anniversary this week
with gifts of soft toys kitted out in mini fluorescent jackets for
children at Park Junior School, Kettering.

Brightkidz founder Alison Holland said, ‘To mark our fifth anniversary
of trading we presented children from Park Junior School with toy high
vis puppies, reflectors and pencils. The ten children who received the
puppies had been chosen by the school because they have made really
special efforts to promote walking and road safety so it was also a
reward for their efforts’.

The school was also presented with a ‘high vis teddy mascot’ which will be cared for by whichever class has the most children walking to school.

BrightKidz was set up by Mrs Holland after she started a ‘Walking Bus’ scheme at her children’s school in Geddington and found it hard to find attractive fluorescent, reflective jackets in children’s sizes. She realised ‘high vis’ jackets would be a great way to help keep all children safe on their way to and from school or when cycling. She set up BrightKidz as a social enterprise and with her team of nine staff now sells a wide range of fluorescent, reflective clothing and accessories for children and adults across the UK and abroad.

She says, ‘As a business we are all really pleased we have reached the five year landmark. Park Junior School was actually our very first customer so we are delighted   they are part of our celebrations.

I think our success is due to the fun way we make it safer and more attractive for parents to let their children walk and cycle, which is good for everyone. Also, most of our products are UK-made and people now recognise the importance of ‘buying local’.  We hope the next five years will bring us even more success.
