My Green Directory paperback to be distributed in The Guardian!

Friday, October 28th, 2011

The online eco directory My Green Directory has recently partnered with King Lion Media, the publishers of GREEN Magazine to create a paperback eco directory.

GREEN is distributed quarterly in the Guardian’s Saturday Supplement, and it has been announced that the My Green Directory paperback will also be distributed with GREEN in the Guardian in January 2012.

‘We’re delighted to have been given this opportunity. The sole purpose My Green Directory is to help and inspire the environmentally conscious, bringing to light green companies, green issues & green lifestyle choices, so to get our advertisers in front of a broadsheet audience is just fantastic.’ said Sue Jueno, Director and founder of My Green Directory.

‘Online we promote all types of eco businesses, a large number of which are small start-ups with little advertising budget.  Our low cost paperback options now give even the smallest of businesses the chance to be seen in main stream media’

Not only will the paperback be with GREEN Magazine in the Guardian, the 200,000 copies will also be distributed by Permaculture Magazine, the Eden Project,  Mamapacks – the ethically influenced mum & baby sample packs, Suma Wholesale’s distribution network, Planet Organic in London, The Eco Village events throughout the summer, at Bricks & Bread, the leading Sustainable Living Centre, at the London Green Fair and more…

Unlimited free digital copies will be available from January 2012 and you can reserve your copy here.

Eco/ethical companies – to book your space please email Sue on hello@mygreendirectory.info or call Jo / Livia on 01737 237900.  See our media pack for more information.

Can social media save the planet?

Launch of the UK’s first ever Eco Tweet Up

Leading thinkers in both digital communications and the environment will be coming together on Tuesday 20th September to explore whether social media could provide the answer to climate change and other environmental issues.

Known as the Eco Tweet Up, the event brings together not for profit organisations, grassroots activists, social entrepreneurs and ethical brands. The aim of the event is to explore, discuss and debate how social media can be used to generate social change around environmental issues.

Eco Tweet Up founder, Esther Freeman said: “We’ve seen some incredible social actions organised through Twitter and other digital forums. The #riotcleanup hashtag on Twitter, which mobilised thousands after the UK riots was an amazing example of this. However many organisations are still failing to harness the interactive power of this incredible new technology. Hopefully the Eco Tweet Up will provide inspiration and maybe even create a few new digital partnerships to enable us to deal with one of the biggest threats that faces humankind.”

The first Eco Tweet Up takes place from 5.30pm to 8.30pm at Eurostar’s head office. Speakers will include:

  • Do the Green Thing – a not-for-profit organisation that encourage others to lead a greener life through a worldwide online community and inspiring video content
  • Futerra Sustainability Communications – the leading sustainable communications agency who have been helping to save the world for over 10 years. Futerra are the authors of the Sizzle report, which has helped rethink the way we communicate sustainability.
  • Chris Smith, curator of Ecotube, the green equivalent of Youtube with a mission to change the world one video view at a time. Chris teaches social media to charities & NGO’s as part of this mission.

The Eco Tweet Up is free to attend. To register for tickets email info@mswandas.co.uk

Paul Testa Architecture Introduction

Monday, July 25th, 2011

Paul Testa Architecture is me, Paul Testa.  I have always been an active outdoor person.  This gives me a social & physical appreciation of our environment.

This strongly influences my other passion; for Architecture and the built environment.  I am especially interested in the way buildings are procured and made; the nuts and bolts of the process. I have always seen the technology of building to be something that can enhance buildings and the built environment functionally, aesthetically and environmentally.

I work closely with my clients to produce designs that closely meet their project requirements.  I take the values of good design, good value, long term flexibility and environmental sustainability to produce healthy, flexible and useful buildings and places in which people enjoy living and working.

I am regulated by the architects registration board (arb) and am an active member of the AECB in Yorkshire as part of my aim to promote sustainable building.  I am also an associate design tutor at the Sheffield School of Architecture and teach environment and technology to both undergraduate and March students.

If you are interested I write regular news updates and short articles on sustainable construction and sustainable issues on my website news page.  I am always keen to connect with likeminded building professionals, designers and potential clients.  If you want to chat or ask a question, please get in touch.

Eco Print as a ‘one -stop -shop’

Print and everything else.

Eco Print are a 100% environmentally friendly alternative to traditional printing methods using recycled paper and card. Our new energy efficient digital printer needs less heat in the process and at the end of its use will be broken down and recycled. Our litho printer uses a plate-making process that is totally chemical free and uses vegetable based inks.

A recent addition to our service is the provision of banners made from biodegradable material – there is no loss of quality it is just when discarded the banner will start to degrade in weeks as opposed to years. We are proud to offset carbon generated in the postage of our printing and we use a telephone provider that carbon offsets and has a good environmental policy in place.

As an environmentally friendly print company you would expect this kind of thing, so what makes us stand out from the crowd?

Well, we have a full Graphic Design service available – our head designer boasts 30 plus years of experience and offers high end work ranging from stationery design to logo design, full branding and corporate I.D. We are also happy to develop your existing artwork and provide simpler designs to suit differing budgets.

Eco Print is sister company to Addison Design  and both are based next to each other – this allows us to provide the full design service as mentioned above but also Website Design and Build.

Many of our regular clients benefit from our ‘one-stop-shop’ for all their branding, print and design needs. Our experience means that Eco Pint can build, maintain and protect your brand giving consistency to your marketing materials.

How Sustainable are your shoes?

Friday, March 4th, 2011

Ethical and eco fashion have become big news in recent years with plenty of coverage of the environmental and ethical impacts of clothes manufacture and waste. But shoes and their sustainability is something that is not considered so often.

Have you ever considered how sustainable your shoes are? As a fashion item, whilst we expect our shoes to look great and be comfortable and functional, they are often considered throw away products which are discarded after just a few wears purely because they have gone out of fashion. The most sustainable shoes are not only incredibly comfortable but are also well made so that they will last for a long time. Classic and versatile styles are also the most sustainable as they won’t go out of fashion.

No matter how long lasting a pair of shoes is, it will eventually reach the end of its useful life and will need to be disposed of. Synthetic materials pose the biggest problems for disposal as they do not easily biodegrade so will remain in landfill for years to come. But even natural materials will cause carbon dioxide emissions as they decompose which contributes to global warming.

Another key factor in deciding how sustainable you shoes are which materials are used to make them and how they are made. Synthetic materials use non renewable fossil fuels in an energy intensive manufacturing process and can also create significant pollution. Leather has environmental impacts as the rearing of livestock creates carbon dioxide emissions and the process of tanning the leather is damaging to the health of the workers and the environment.

Finally the manufacturing of shoes often creates waste and pollution and the glue used to hold the shoes together is highly toxic for people and the environment.

Some of the most sustainable and ethical shoes are made using natural materials like organic hemp and cork, both of which are biodegradable, sustainable and grown without the use of chemical pesticides. Leather has been tanned with natural chemicals which are not toxic is also a better alternative than conventional leather. Organic wool is also another potential material for sustainable shoes, it better for the environment than conventional wool and possibly other synthetic alternatives. Shoes can also be sewn together with natural fibres for a less toxic alternative to glue.

When buying shoes you should try and buy shoes to last. Think how well they will go with the clothes in your wardrobe and be sure that they are really comfortable before buying.
