The EcoVillage brings you more events in 2010

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

The Kent based event organiser, The EcoVillage, now in its third year, has grown from strength to strength. Founded in 2008 with a single annual event, The EcoVillage is now organising 3 events and potentially adding another date for 2010.

The EcoVillage will exhibit at The South of England Show, The Kent County Show and The Kent County Fair. The idea behind The EcoVillage is for it to sit within large scale mainstream events and helps organisations promote green products, services and initiatives to the widest possible audience.  Each area will feature ‘green’ exhibitors, interactive displays, demonstrations and picnic areas.

Victoria Whitlock, The EcoVillage Director, said:

“We believed that people wanted to become more environmental friendly but found the information out there overwhelming. Our aim was to make it easy for people to live a greener life. Bringing together a wide range of exhibitors gives the public a chance to speak to companies face to face”

The EcoVillage has built up a loyal group of exhibitors. A regular is the organic food company, Riverford Organics, who this year will sponsor the food areas both at The Kent County Show and The South of England Show.

If you would like to become part of The EcoVillage at any of the show mention please call Victoria Whitlock 01227 271261 or visit the website at www.theecovillage.co.uk

RiverfordRIVERFORD ORGANIC CONFIRMED AS SPONSOR FOR THE KENT SHOW
We’re really pleased to be working with Riverford Organic as a sponsor for our picnic area at the Kent County Show.  Riverford have been an exhibitor with us from the first EcoVillage, and had great success last year signing customers up to their veg box scheme, exceeding their targets for the weekend.  This year they will be taking over our picnic area, with cookery demonstrations and the Riverford Veg team will be showing their products and services.  There will be a special show offer for customers who sign up for one of their veg boxes at the Show.  And, we are pleased to say that Riverford on the Move will be serving delicious organic food throughout the Show from breakfast onwards – great news for our exhibitors and visitors alike!

LATEST EXHIBITORS
Welcome to: Space Shuffle, Wild Thing Wildlife Consultants, Charity Bank, Eternal Energy, Energy Savings Trust, SEAT and Kidz Organic – all of whom have taken advantage of our early booking discounts and have secured their space for next year.

globeWHAT ARE WE DOING AT THE ECOVILLAGE?
Well, we’ve all survived the first recession year that many of our businesses have been through, and we’re looking to the future. Here at The EcoVillage we are confident that we have a strong, sustainable business here running events which support green business.  So we have increased the number of events we will be running in 2010, and are looking for new opportunities for 2011.  We intend to build this platform, increasing awareness of our brand, and your businesses and develop a strong online marketing presence to support the customer facing events that you attend with us.
We would like to see green businesses become so mainstream that no one needs The EcoVillage any more!

We are especially pleased to bring on board the South of England Show as the Showground itself is already exploring ways of lowering its resource requirements and environmental impact.

We are also conscious that as a company we should be looking to our own environmental impact.  The EcoVillage is run with no central office and unnecessary commuter journeys. We use an online office, skype and car sharing where possible. We minimise our resource use and recycle all office consumables wherever it is possible. We all balance our work lives with the needs of our families and we do believe that what we do now directly affects the legacy we leave for our children. In 2010 we will be tracking the CO2 emissions of our business so that we have absolute figures to work on reducing.  Although we are a small company we still believe that we should do what we can.

If you know of an event you think we should be looking at, please do let us know.  Or if you have any questions or comments, please email us and let us know. Thanks!

Levenshulme’s First Clothes Swap Shop!

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Saturday 31st October, 2.00-3.00pm Levenshulme Library, Cromwell Grove, Levenshulme, Manchester

FANCY A NEW WARDROBE FOR FREE? Update your wardrobe and beat the credit crunch! Bring along three clean, unwanted items of clothing, shoes or accessories and take away as many items as you like from AfSL’s* first Levenshulme Swap Shop, absolutely free. A swap shop is a sustainable event which targets a consumer audience and is a simple way of reusing old clothes, which makes environmental and financial sense.

Clothes drop off 2.00-2.30pm, swapping begins 2.30-3.00pm, FREE if you have three items of clothing and £1 if you don’t. Donations also welcome.

This project aims to reach people in the Levenshulme area, through events which local residents can become involved in and through providing information on sustainable issues. This includes understanding sustainability and how to make it workable for the individual and the community. For sustainability to be appealing to all, it needs to be accessible. The aim is to provide this link so everyone in the area can join in the fun.

The Swap Shop is a collaboration between Action for Sustainable Living and Manchester City Council, with funding from The Learning, Skills and Employment Network (LSEN).

Action for Sustainable Living supports individuals and their communities to make a difference. We believe that small steps lead to big changes.

“New clothes are now so cheap that there’s a real culture of disposable fashion.  By swapping our unwanted items, we’re helping to keep fashion sustainable, and as individuals we can look after our environment by reducing the amount of unwanted clothes going to landfill”, says Wendy Allport, Local Project Manager for Levenshulme, AfSL.

Article 13 supports the World Day to Overcome Extreme Poverty

Friday, October 16th, 2009

As part of our UN Global Compact (UNGC) commitment  to respect human rights, Article 13 supports the World Day to Overcome Extreme Poverty (http://www.oct17.org/en) 2009 on  17 October. This special day, established by the UN in 1992 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, represents a social movement, which strives to end world poverty. It brings together, on a local level, people living in extreme poverty, and those fighting extreme poverty, in order to generate opinions, decisions and ideas for actions.

There are several ways for individuals and businesses to support this cause:

To do our bit here at Article 13 in the build up to Saturday, 17 October, we will include the World Day to Overcome Extreme Poverty logo and link, as well as a brief descriptor on our email signatures to disseminate this initiative to our network of clients, associates and in-house team.

Read some of Article 13’s resources to explore the poverty issue in more detail:
