Final List Of Greener Festival Awards Announced For 2009

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

The final list of Greener Festival Award winners has been announced for 2009 with another twenty festivals picking up the prestigious gong, adding to the seventeen which were announced in July, midway through the Festival season in the UK.

The new awards go to festivals including Bestival, The City of London Festival, the Cambridge Folk Festival and The Croissant Neuf Summer Party. These Festivals join festivals such as Glastonbury, T-in-the-Park and The Isle of Wight festival who had already picked up the coveted award. The organisers of the Award, campaign and advice group AGreenerFestival.com said that they were particularly pleased with the number of outstanding festivals in 2009 with twelve festivals being awarded very high marks. The Award is based on a 56 part questionnaire which covers office management, greenhouse gas emissions, supporting green initiatives, travel and transport, waste and recycling, water management, environmental protection and noise reduction and almost all the festivals will receive a visit from an independent auditor to assess their green efforts.

All winning Festivals will receive a special trophy designed by competition winner Sade Goddard from Keswick School in Cumbria whose winning design features a Red Kite motif and is made from recycled plastic bottles, crushed CDs and remoulded Wellington boots.

The winner of the overall Greener Festival Award 2009 will be announced at the UK Festival Awards which will be held at the O2 Arena in London on November 19th 2009.

AGreenerFestival co-founder Ben Challis said “We were worried that in a year when the recession bit hard we might see Festivals shying away from their ongoing commitment to green issues, but we have been generally pleased with the efforts of festivals around the world to keep sustainability high on their own agenda and to promote environmental awareness to fans. We had more ‘outstanding’ winners in 2009 and a 20% rise in applications from 2008, with more international applications than ever with fine winners from Australia, four from the USA and four from mainland Europe. But much remains to be done and in the UK, and a car centric society means that audience travel, and indeed leisure travel in general is a massive problem, clearly not helped by an obvious lack of coherent public transport policies.

The Greener Festival Awards are supported by Robertson Taylor, insurance brokers.

Recycling Your Energy Saving Light Bulbs

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

Energy saving light bulbs are part of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) initiative which means that those who sell these products must provide information to the public on how they can be recycled. You could speak to the retailer you purchased your energy saving light bulb from about how to recycle it or alternatively you could contact your local authority to see if they will recycle energy saving light bulbs. If you don’t know who your local authority is you can find this out at Directgov

You can also find out more about disposing of energy saving light bulbs at Recolight.co.uk

For more information about energy saving light bulbs, including their mercury content, visit the Energy Saving Trust website.

Record Number Of Car Breakdowns Expected

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

A combination of cold weather and cost cutting by as many as 3 million motorists is likely to result in a record number of stranded drivers on Monday 5th January 2009, according to the Environmental Transport Association (ETA), a not-for-profit breakdown company.

December’s cold weather is forecast to continue through the New Year period and this will exacerbate the problem of flat batteries – traditionally the main cause of car breakdowns on the first day back at work after Christmas because vehicles have been left unused.

It is feared that the number of stranded motorists this year may be higher because people are trying to save money by cutting back on what they regard as non-essential services – the equivalent of 3 million drivers are prepared to go without breakdown cover in order to reduce their motoring costs, according to a poll of British motorists conducted by the ETA earlier this month.

Director of the ETA, Andrew Davis said: “It’s not just people who can feel flat following the New Year festivities; the sub-zero temperatures predicted for early January mean many car batteries will fail on that first Monday back to work.”

The ETA will employ a fleet of 8,500 recovery vehicles to rescue motorists this January. It offers the following tips to avoid a breakdown:

1. Most breakdowns at this time of the year are due to flat batteries rather than mechanical failure – try and avoid leaving your car unused for days at a time during the current cold snap.
2. If you already have breakdown cover, make sure it covers you at home as there is a good chance that is where a car battery will fail
3. Doing without breakdown cover can be false economy – prices range from £30 a year.

Wind industry welcomes climate change report

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

BWEA, the UK’s leading renewable energy trade body, today welcomed the publication of the Climate Change Committee’s first report Building a Low Carbon Economy.

The report explains the case for the new 80% emissions reduction target and recommends the level for the first three national carbon budgets under the Climate Change Act.

The report also highlights the vital role that renewable energy will play over the next decade in tackling climate change. It stresses that wind power can deliver 30% of the UK’s electricity supply by 2020 and be part of a radical decarbonisation of the economy by 2030.

Maria McCaffery MBE, BWEA Chief Executive, said “Renewable energy is not a luxury item. Without a dramatic change in the way we use and produce our energy we will not stop climate change.”

The CCC calls for a 34% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, at the cost of less than 1% of GDP growth. The report recognises that higher renewable costs would be just one part of the impact, with greater spending on renewables offset by savings elsewhere. There are currently 3GW of installed wind schemes operating in the UK today, but a further 20GW are already at one stage or another of development.

McCaffery added “By 2020 there could be over 30GW of wind energy installed in the UK. This report should help to lay to rest the misconceptions and misinformation about the role and viability of wind power over the next decade and beyond.”
