Wood and plants such as bamboo, have a large number of vessels that carry water and nutrients up from the earth when they are alive. The types of charcoal that are suitable for water filtration are made using a slow and careful process, so that these fine vessels remain intact, leaving a highly porous and permeable structure. (You could say charcoal is the carbonised skeleton of wood and plants). The size of the pores varies – anything from 50 nm to less than 1nm. (1nm = 1 billionth metre). So when water roams through those myriad porous cavities, chemical constituents such as chlorine are trapped in the cavities, removing the familiar tap water taste and odour.

If we were able to unfold all the pores and spread them on a flat surface, amazingly 1g of high quality charcoal could cover between one and three tennis courts – depending on the type of wood and processing temperature. Generally bamboo charcoal made at 800-1000 degrees is considered to be the most porous – and it is this kind of charcoal that has a surface area equivalent to up to three tennis courts per gram.

In Japan, people who use charcoal for water filtering at home tend to use either ‘binchotan’ or bamboo charcoal. Binchotan is an oak wood charcoal, which is very tough and heavy. For many centuries it has been an indispensable feature of high-end restaurant grills, as it generates an excellent quality, long-lasting flame that adds a wonderful flavour to meat and fish. It happens to make a rather good water filter too. ‘Kishu binchotan’ made in the Kishu region of south west Japan, is considered the best of its kind.

Bamboo charcoal tends to be made mostly for non-fuel uses. Due to its fantastic ability to absorb pollutants both in air and water, it is widely used as a natural water filter and air purifier. Bamboo grows in most parts of Japan and so bamboo charcoal is made throughout the country.

Whether it’s binchotan or bamboo charcoal, well-made charcoal is the result of real craftsmanship. It is almost always made in traditional clay kilns. Charcoal making is all about heating wood or plants without oxygen (or almost) and experienced charcoal makers have their own kiln design and temperature control techniques. They raise the kiln temperature slowly over several days to ensure thorough and even carbonisation. The process culminates with the ‘nerashi’, in which air is blown into the kiln in order to raise the temperature to 1000 degree or more. In the case of binchotan, after the ‘nerashi’, the charcoal is pulled out of the kiln while it’s still red-hot and extinguished by being covered with ashes. By contrast, bamboo charcoal is usually extinguished inside the kiln by sealing the air passages and it is left for a few days to cool down. In either case, it takes 10-14 days, in a labour of love. Charcoal made in this way is very ‘pure’ with a very high carbon content of, typically, 95% – the remainder is mainly minerals.

Other characteristics of slowly made high temperature charcoal pieces are that they tend to have a silvery sheen and are much harder and heavier than ordinary barbeque charcoal – which can be a bit ‘woody’. They are also beautiful objects. It seems only right that two weeks of hard work create not only a highly versatile charcoal, but also one that is aesthetically attractive and appeals to the human senses.

Here is a simple test we have performed to show how well charcoal inhibits mould growth by regulating moisture.

Day 1

Small pieces of home baked bread without any preservatives are covered with glass – one with a piece of bamboo charcoal (approx. 2g) on the left, and the other without.

Day 7

After 7 days mould is clearly visible on the right and the glass is cloudier with moisture.

The glass on the left is much clearer as the charcoal has absorbed the excess moisture. Only a small amount of white mould appears on the bread.

Day 8

The mould now covers most of the bread on the right and the glass is quite cloudy.

On the left, the bread has some white mould but is nowhere near as the one on the right.

Day 8 without glass

The image without glass: quite amazing!

Using magnetic text blocks and diagrams children are able to place the image of a damaged organ onto the correct location on the body. In addition to learning the ill effects from smoking and alcohol they can also learn of the beneficial effects from correct nutrition. The Eatwell version of these educational games shows the health paybacks gained form eating a balanced diet.

My BodyBoard series of health and nutrition teaching aids

The “bodyboards” were developed by an ex teacher who used his experience in class linked with the graphics skill of his wife to launch these great new learning games. Allowing children to see the adverse effects on the organs of the body and place the images correctly on the body is a significant ways of getting the point across. Keen2learn will adding extensions to this exciting range as they become available.

The boards can be easily displayed on a an easel or flip chart easel and stored with the magnetic images in place in an optional storage bag.

About my ingredients:

► Shea Butter: Research has shown that Shea is effective in treating and alleviating the symptoms of dry and sensitive skin, eczema and psoriasis. It is naturally moisturising and readily absorbed by the skin.

► Jojoba Oil: Increases the overall health of the skin, particularly its elasticity and strengthens the epidermis.

► Coconut Butter: When absorbed into the skin and connective tissues, it helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by helping to keep connective tissues strong and supple.

Here is what my customers are saying about the Organic Lavender Moisturiser:

-”Utterly glorious!”

Sustainable Development is on the Government’s agenda for the long-term.

Although climate change is the most serious global environmental threat, promoting a clear and transparent sustainable strategy throughout organisations can lead to cost savings – whilst also facilitating the firm to develop a competitive advantage that enables them to capitalise on environmental and energy efficiency opportunities. The NHS has already been set the challenge of making efficiency savings of between £15 billion and £20 billion across 2011 to 2014 to reinvest in year-on-year improvements in quality.

One way the NHS can make savings is by becoming more sustainable.

The NHS is the largest single estate in Europe, employing 5 per cent of the UK workforce, with a very large carbon footprint of 18 million tonnes of CO2 per year. This is composed of energy (22%), travel (18%) and procurement (60%). This means that meeting the Climate Change Act targets of 26% reduction by 2020 and 80% reduction by 2050 will be a challenge. In order to meet its obligations under the Climate Change Act, the NHS needs to embed sustainable practices across the sector – people, procurement and processes. The development of the NHS Sustainable Development Unit helps the NHS fulfil its potential as a leading sustainable and low carbon healthcare service.

With a keen interest is leading change to a low carbon economy; International Sustainability Recruitment Consultancy, Allen & York have interviewed

Sonia Roschnik, the Operational Director at the NHS Development Unit:

A&Y: What are the current measures the NHS is making toward a sustainable future?

SR: Firstly it might be helpful to give some context for clarity; the NHS isn’t one organisation it is made up of around 400 organisations all of which are going through a period of profound change. The NHS Sustainable Development Unit (SDU) for England is a small unit which works in close collaboration with NHS organisations, the Department of Health, the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and environmental groups. We provide leadership, support and policy input to ensure the NHS is leading the public sector in sustainable development and mitigating climate change.

We offer support and advice and provide tools to create a more sustainable business model and raise awareness throughout the organisation, from ground to board level, of the key issues.

To drive the carbon reduction strategy forward the NHS SDU has put in place a Sustainable Development Management Plan, which has been officially signed off at Board level. The plan was supported by a consultative process across the NHS and the SDU were cheered that 66% of people agreed that carbon reduction and a sustainable future are of great importance to the NHS.

Each NHS Trust reports annually on their sustainability indicators, including; procurement (59% of carbon emission), travel (17%), building energy usage (24%) and waste. The SDU collate the data, monitor usage and feedback to the trusts.

A&Y: How have budget cuts affected the efforts towards a more sustainable health service?

SR: In some ways the budget cuts will act as a catalyst to support the process of creating a more sustainable organisation. It follows that as energy, waste and procured goods are reduced or organisations act more sustainably in these areas, then money is saved.

However, the danger is that budget cuts might also mean less effort is focused on sustaining the reductions in the future. So it is vital for the SDU to keep sustainability on the boardroom agenda. A large part of our mission is about enabling discussion at board level and supporting strategic debate around saving money, reducing carbon and ultimately achieving government targets of 10% carbon reduction by 2015.

A&Y: How are trusts audited on environmental compliance issues such as 14001?

SR: The SDU doesn’t formally audit the trusts, however there is a process of reporting, monitoring and commitment from each trust to achieve its targets.

A&Y: In what areas of sustainability has the SDU been most successful – give examples of schemes that have embraced more sustainable practice?

SR: A recent success has been the agreement and sign-up of NHS organisations to the Sustainable Development Management Plan process, which sets the blueprint from which everything else should follow.

Specific examples of where the NHS is looking to become more sustainable would include tele-medicine, whereby clinical follow-ups can be carried out over the phone with your doctor and video link access is available for direct contact with specialists.

Emphasis is put on contributing to health, rather than treating sickness. Home treatment would cut down on the amount of travel to and from surgeries and hospital, thereby saving on carbon miles.

A&Y: With environmental stewardship being one of the biggest agendas in all industry sectors, what are biggest challenges the NHS face over the next 5 years?

SR: Primarily the challenge is to maintain momentum in a rapidly changing organisation. The abolition of primary care trusts, changes to the CRC, the recent public sector cuts all affect the NHS.

Opportunities are also opening up to us, for example the lifting of the ban on public sector organisations to produce renewable energy.

However, the huge number of challenges and opportunities can’t divert us from our goal of embedding Sustainable Development Management Plans in all NHS organisations.

Records confirm that the Greek physician Dioscorides used the plant to treat mouth infections, sores and wounds in the first century. Aloe Vera is truly a ‘super food’ — research has shown that much of its biological activity is attributed to polysaccharides, the main molecule being mannose, a polysaccharide thought to be responsible for directing the synergistic activity of a vast array of compounds.

There is a long-standing practice of using the inner-leaf Gel from the Aloe Vera plant as a digestive aid and skin care ingredient; however, there is huge potential beyond topical application. Aloe Vera is now widely used as a ‘super’ nutrient for a range of health conditions, such as immune system modulation, anti-diabetic activity/blood sugar balance, kidney stone prevention, oral/gum health, anti-inflammatory action for joint pain caused by sports injury or osteoarthritis, cholesterol/triglyceride reduction, antioxidant protection and general detoxification. Aloe’s hypoglycemic and antioxidant benefits may also benefit the liver and heart. For digestive health, a medical research trial has shown that Aloe Vera Gel can help relieve the symptoms of ulcerative colitis, a type of autoimmune inflammatory bowel disease which is
notoriously difficult to treat. This formal study reported that 47 percent of participants who took our Aloe Vera Gel for just 4 weeks reported an improvement in their symptoms. Such remarkable results give real hope for many more medical breakthroughs in future.

Forever Living Products founded in 1978 and operating in over 140 countries has become the largest grower, manufacturer and distributer of aloe vera products in the world. Avoiding the use of herbicides and pesticides, our patented stabilisation process ensures our aloe is essentially identical to the inner leaf gel.

The key to our success is a commitement to quality and purity. We start with 100% inner gel, adding just enough of other ingredients to produce outstanding results. We have a selection of aloe vera drinks, bee products, nutrional supplements, skin care, personal care, make up, animals and home products. All come with a 60 day money back guarante so you have nothing to loose in trying the products.

TOP CHEFS SUPPORT

ESSENTIAL HEALTHY EATING FORTNIGHT

Eight top chefs have given one of their favourite recipes to encourage people to cook healthy food at home during Healthy Eating Fortnight (October 18-31, 2010).

Rose Elliot, Rachel Green, Annabel Karmel, Nick Nairn, Jo Pratt, Simon Rimmer, Antony Worrall Thompson and Aldo Zilli have each given a healthy eating vegetarian recipe to appear in the Essential Healthy Eating Booklet, published by Essential, the leading independent organic, whole food, vegetarian producer.

Tempting Recipe Ideas

The Essential Healthy Eating Booklet includes a range of tempting dishes. Aldo Zilli and Nick Nairn have lighter meals with their Lentil, Feta & Roast Pepper Salad and Asparagus with Boiled Eggs & Parmesan. Rose Elliot’s Lentil Croquettes with Tomato Sauce and Annabel Karmel’s Vegetarian Lasagne are traditional family favourites while Jo Pratt’s Tenderstem Broccoli Biryani and Rachel Green’s Pea Hummus Wraps make for colourful dishes. To finish off, Antony Worrall Thompson’s Herby Fruit Salad and Simon Rimmer’s Almond Granola Bars will satisfy your sweet tooth while still keeping things pretty healthy at home.

“If you want to eat healthily, home cooking is a good place to start because you know exactly what ingredients are being used and there are no hidden ‘food demons’ such as extra salt, sugar, preservatives, fillers or over-processed, nutritionally poor ingredients,” says leading nutritionist Fiona Hunter. “It’s terrific that these renowned chefs have given up some of their favourite healthy recipes so people can try some new dishes at home,” says Fiona.

Making a few simple food swaps in everyday cooking can also help produce a healthy meal: here are Fiona Hunter’s Top Ten Swaps

* Swap butter for olive or rapeseed oil when cooking

* Swap salt for fresh herbs, garlic or lemon zest for seasoning

* Swap canned fruit in syrup for fruit in water or fruit juice

* Swap canned beans and lentils in salted water for pulses in water

* Swap mince beef for turkey or Quorn mince

* Swap white bread, pasta and rice for whole grain varieties

* Swap fizzy drinks for fresh fruit juice topped up with fizzy water

* Swap cream for Greek yogurt

* Swap sweet biscuits for oatcakes topped with mashed banana

* Swap sugar for light agave syrup or honey in recipes

The Essential Healthy Eating Recipe Booklet can be downloaded at

Whether the advert has an educational link seems immaterial. Many advertisers are merely seizing the seasonal opportunity to promote their wares. The positive elements to many that soon kids will off the streets is countered by an opposite force – increased traffic as we choose to use cars to ferry kids to school. Shops heralded the process with essential teaching and schooling resources being paraded alongside uniforms, stationery, and the of course the ubiquitous Oxford set of maths instruments supplied in the same tin box 40 years after its introduction!

The Back to School slogan hovers over the idyllic existence of a school child on the long summer break. Returning to school means enforced routines, falling light levels as autumn approaches, odd smells from damp children, the appearance of the magic sawdust bucket for the odd vomiting child and the exchange of a cricket and athletics markings for football and rugby posts.

No I didn’t relish school days. Coupled with attending boarding school for a large chunk of my schooling added a further downer. But I’m not alone. Clinical psychologists explain that many children feel apprehensive when returning school – especially if it involves a move up to a new secondary school. Adverse reaction to the new larger environment, the physical scale of the new school in class size, and numbers of teachers can be frightening. Children move from the comfort zone of their old school where they were top dog with years of experience. The obvious outward signs are children who become anxious and find it difficult to fall asleep, feel sick, cry easily and have gone off their food. These are clear signs of anxiety triggered by the unknown. We also suffer from the syndrome as adults in a new environment so it is not age related. They say the condition is the reason why so many adults remain in jobs they dislike. The thought of changing job or career is beset with the unknown. We opt to stay put. Maybe the emotion stirred by seeing our children in some distress activates latent emotions and concerns in adults. But there is light at the end of the tunnel.

The clingy child whose life is devastated by attendance at the new school slowly adapts to the new environment. Day by day the angst dissipates. By day seven things are inevitably easing. By day fourteen they start to feel comfortable. The trick is to reassure the child that their feelings and concerns are very natural and that most children feel concerned at the start of term and especially at a new school. Giving comparisons to their feelings become positive in their previous class, year and school helps to reassure that the anxiety will ease. Self awareness of the symptoms and comparison with past experience will help to reassure.

Not every child can be expected to favourably respond, but the majority do. As parents, seeing the situation and concerns through the eyes of a child can help quell the fears of this unknown territory, especially relevant in the move to secondary school.

And once we have consoled our children, perhaps it’s time to look in the mirror and reconsider that move we need to take to reorientate our job and career. A staggering 80 per cent of adults are in jobs they dislike, But a move and that new challenge is as just as daunting as that experienced by the child and the new school. Time to reflect on applying the guidance given to your child and allay your own fears and make that move to enhance your opportunities. You know the one - you have always put off because of your concerns over a move to a new company with a new environment, new people and the feeling of being new and isolated. We have a lot to learn from children!

Welcome to the Natural Alternative Products Summer Offers.

Keep reading for news, tips and special offers to save you money; and find us on facebook to stay updated with all of our latest products.

Mosquitos and Malaria

Malaria has been in the news recently when celebrity singer Cheryl Cole got infected on a recent trip to Africa. What you might not know is that approximately 3 million people die annually from this disease – including a small number of Britons. Malaria occurs mainly in sub-tropical areas of the world including large parts of Africa, Asia, Australasia and the Americas.

If you’re concerned, prevention is better than cure, and you should consult your doctor before travelling and prepare yourself with mosquito nets and repellents. We sell a large number of all-natural, chemical free prevention methods including Natural Patches, incognito Mosquito Spray and Citronella Essential Oil.

Whether you’re concerned about malaria or just want to stop annoying bites, we have a natural solution for you!

Buy 2 15 day packs of patches and get a free 7 day pack and a free suntan lotion!

As well as stocking a great new range of products, we have also started a brand new website focussed on the Summer, Festival and Travel market. Check us out at www.natural-travel-products.co.uk

Sun burn prevention

Ok, we’ll be the first to admit that we haven’t had the best summer, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed for a hot August! But if you’re jetting off on holiday, you’ll want to keep you, your family and the kids safe.

We all know that your high street brands of sun tan lotion work. However, did you know that most sun tan lotions contain petrochemicals, synthetic preservatives, and a whole host of other nasty ingredients? What if there was a range of sun tan lotions which were just as effective, made using all natural ingredients and processes – luckily for you, there is!

We sell a wide variety of chemical-free sunscreens which have a range of different protections, for kids and adults, from some of the leading manufacturers including JASON, Green People, Soleo and UVNatural.

Personal Care

Along with the hot weather comes that sticky, uncomfortable feeling, and let’s face it, we’re all going to sweat more. We have a fantastic product from Hawaii: Body Mints. This is a food supplement, as featured on CNN, which really works to combat body odours, halitosis and perspiration. Read more on our website.

We also have a range of all-natural deodorants, a more traditional solution to your summer needs, from award winning manufacturers like Lavera and Urtekram.

Dry Skin and Anti-Ageing Solutions

In the Summer months it is especially important to treat your largest organ right – your skin! The sun can really dry out your skin, as you spend more time outdoors and less time sheltering from the rain. Check our website for a plethora of solutions; a few of our bestsellers include:

Hope’s Relief Cream – a great product from Australia which is ideal for those with dry skin, eczema, psoriasis or just sensitive skin. There are no petrochemicals and is ideal for everyday use for adults and kids alike.

OG Ireland Natural Peat Face and Body Mask – as featured on This Morning by Dr Chris – this really is the latest solution; we are currently the only UK website supplying the domestic market – we’ve had great feedback from some of our customers already who are singing its praises. Simply apply, leave for 10 minutes and wash off – you’ll be surprised at the results.

Soap is one of the prime causes of dry skin and can be harmful for those with eczema. There are many steroidal products available for your pharmacy, but you may also want to consider our Silvatec Cleansing Bar with antimicrobial protection and vitamin E – many of our customers swear by it. We don’t want to blind you with science, but it contains silver ion technology and comes at a great low price; read more on our website.

For our HUGE range of anti-aging creams and skincare products, have a look at our sister website over at My Ageless Lifestyle.

Superfoods

You may have heard açai berries mentioned in the news recently, but not know what they do or what makes them a superfood. Simply put, a superfood contains high level of nutrients conferring a range of different health benefits. The açai berry is high in antioxidants which studies have shown may protect against cancer and other diseases: a like-for-like serving has much more than apple, orange or cranberry juice.

Our açai is sourced directly from Brazil – unlike other websites, we have a direct line to our Brazilian supplier, which means that our açai is 100% pure – you know what you’re getting. Our Pulpa Store website contains a huge range of superfoods, supplements and nutritional foods. Check our offers!

Don’t forget…

If you’re getting on a plane, you’ll need some transparent bags to put your toiletries and liquids in. These can be bought at the airport – you get two of these little bags for £1… Our tip: plan ahead and get ten bags for the low price of 50p!
