A personal introduction from the new editor
Listening to the radio this morning I got a blast from the past, with a novel twist, when I heard David Bowie’s Changes for the first time in years. The twist was hearing a couple of lines as if for the first time, with whole new meaning, despite having heard the song 50 times or more. Here’s the lines . . .
And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They’re quite aware of what they’re going through
I can’t say what Bowie was actually thinking but I felt an absolute sense of identification and, better still, joy when those words radiated through the thick morning cloud of my bunged-up, work-stuffed and just-another-wet-Wednesday head.
Here I am, editor of Pulse, the ultimate news service for the ethical sector, the sector that’s changing Britain and, glocally speaking, the world. I’m also editor of Sustained magazine which recently doubled its distribution. The feedback coming from the experts is fantastic – ‘the
magazine for the 21st Century’ and ‘the most important magazine in the sector along with the Ecologist.’
And it’s all in vogue now isn’t it – this changing thing – no more the alternative, underground fringe. We’re the new mainstream. Not so long ago we were the children who were spat on – ‘commies’, ‘malcontents’, ‘dreamers’, ‘drifters’, ‘wasters’, ‘parasites’, ‘hippys’, ‘tree-huggers’, ‘new-age loonies’, ‘lefties’, ‘women’s libbers’, ‘bleeding heart liberals’ and so on but now the society that reviled us is not just beginning to accept us – it’s starting to follow!
Unfortunately it’s taken the likes of the findings of the Stern report to kick them into action and no doubt many still begrudge us, whilst many others are going with the change just for their own gain. But the feet-draggers, grumblers, reactionaries, incurably cycnical, dim-wit, greedy, selfish, ignorant, lazy, myopic muppets are on the run and, if there’s still enough time, the day will be ours.
So, take a moment now to think on all the changes of recent decades and your part in them – even if it’s just the small part (but infinitely essential one) of being that little bit more conscious, considerate and compassionate. Think of those you know who are working toward the same vision as you, and think of all your fellow members and supporters of Ethical Junction, and the entire ethical community, who are working now, today, and will be tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow toward that same vision. Take this moment to quietly celebrate yourselves and your achievements, and to feel the warm glow of satisfaction spread through your whole being.
Does that feel good?
Good.
Now get back to work. There’s a world to save and we haven’t got all day you know!
