Raising Awareness

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

The latest issue of Sustained, the free lifestyle magazine for smarter living, is out now.

In Issue 9, kindly sponsored by The Converging World, you will find features on alternative energy, permaculture, bushcraft, a carbon debate, alternatives to car ownership, chocolate, a campaign for greater local democracy, an interview with arctic explorer Pen Hadow, and Jules Peck’s vision for the 21st century citizen amongst so much more.

As Sustained is free and designed to be accessible to the majority of people why not use it as a tool to help raise awareness in your community? Alternatively, you might just want a copy for yourself. Either way, here’s how . . .

  1. Ask your local wholefood shop to order copies of Sustained for
you from their suppliers with their next food order (they are delivered
free of charge and come in bundles of 50). National wholefood
suppliers that distribute Sustained are the Suma, Essential and the
Rainbow Wholefood co-operatives. If your local shop chooses to order
from Suma there’s a catalogue code they can use – BK820
  2. Return a few days later and collect your copies.
  3. Distribute them at events or in public places like libraries,
community centres, farmers’ markets etc. The wholefood shop can give
    them out too!

Go Organic – All The Way, With Yes

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Yes is the world’s first and only certified organic range of intimacy products. A British company, Yes, pioneered the formulation of organic ingredients for intimate use. And because they’re based on purity of ingredients, complete supply chain integrity and manufacturing controls, Yes products are certified as organic by the Soil Association.

Exceeding all the parameters of synthetic lubricants, Yes products
deliver performance, purity and pleasure with no compromise (no
concerning chemical ingredients*, no smell, no taste, and no mess).
They represent an innovative departure from traditional lubricant
formulations, using pure plant gums to replace the usual glycerine or
silicone ingredient base, and are approved by the Vegetarian Society.

Appealing to all sexually active people, Yes are pure hypoallergenic
products, a crucial consideration for anyone with health sensitivities,
but also significant to those who are conscious about the chemical load
they put on their bodies.

Designed to work in harmony with the body, Yes products provide
essential lubrication and moisturisation to meet a variety of usage
needs; from pleasure enhancement (through additional lubrication), to
essential moisturisation – managing the discomfort of vaginal dryness
as a result of hormonal change, medical conditions and the side affects
of medical treatments.

Yes products are already being championed by health professionals,
including endorsements from sex therapists, who recommend Yes to enable
extended stimulation and therefore enhance female orgasm, and menopause
experts heralding Yes as a breakthrough approach to vaginal dryness.

Yes products are discreet, inside and out, from their stylish packaging
through to their astonishingly realistic feel. And because Yes products
are nourishing and readily absorbed into the mucosa (vaginal tract)
they leave no sticky residue and gently disappear without trace.

Available in oil-based and water-based varieties, Yes water-based has
the dual function of outstanding lubrication and deep remoisturising.
Both formulations are available in bottles of 25ml (RRP £5.39), 75ml
(RRP £15.66), 125ml (RRP £22.49), and packs of 6 x 25ml bottles (RRP
£26.89).

Go Eco Store Support Recycling Campaign

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

Go Eco Store has provided sponsorship to the Environmental Team at the University of Leicester (UoL) during their recycling campaign in early 2009.

UoL have a strong eco ethic and the Environment Team has an extensive list of issues that they intend to address covering all kinds of environmental impacts at the University. These range from the energy used and the things they buy, to how people get around the University sites and managing the estate to improve conditions for wildlife. It’s not just about how they manage their waste but anything that is of an important environmental concern.

Last year in 2008 UoL ran a Big Green Week and started their recycling scheme, both of which received “Green Apple Awards”, they also enlisted the help of the Carbon Trust to calculate their carbon footprint, and then implemented a carbon management plan with ways of reducing energy.

Some of the things events taking place during 2009 include a recycling campaign which consists of “Golden Bin Challenges” and a Fancy Dress competition evening where all students are required to dress up in “recycled” outfits. The best dressed students will win some eco products supplied by Go Eco Store which are intended to encourage students to adopt an eco lifestyle.

In 2008 the staff at Go Eco Store wanted to improve their lifestyle to be more Eco friendly and started to look at what was available in the high street. They struggled to find many suitable products so investigated the “independent” market. It became obvious that there were a great number of products available but it was difficult to tell which ones offered real value for money. So with this in mind they felt that there would also be many other people trying to do the same thing, and so Go Eco Store was born.

Go Eco Store is trying to help everyone to support their Eco lifestyle by offering a range of products which are not only better for our planet but also kinder on your pocket. We have spent a great deal of time evaluating many products that are eco friendly and have brought together a selection of products that in our opinion offer high quality and great value for money.

The eco qualities of each item have been assessed; their performance evaluated and then compared the cost of using these items to similar products available in the high street. You will find the value for money assessment against each product on the website with it being expressed in the following ways: cost per use, life cycle cost, equivalent cost or quality.

The eco products are energy saving, natural, organic or recycled products and all are intended to reduce the impact on the environment while supporting your Eco home, encouraging an Eco lifestyle….

Guided Walks At Deepdale

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

Tanya Eldridge can usually be found guiding groups through the Italian countryside, but this winter she’s teaming up with Deepdale Backpackers and Camping in Burnham Deepdale on the north Norfolk coast to offer guided walks around this stunning part of the world.

To begin with, Tanya will run three 2 hour guided walks, in the afternoon of 8th January, 29th January and 12th February. These will introduce walkers to the local area, the history, wildlife and Deepdale Farm. As an introductory offer, walkers only need to pay £3 per person.

“I was attracted to Deepdale because of the eco friendly nature of the facilities and the awards they’ve won. Their ethos is one I connect with and the customers will love the guided walks I’m offering and the facilities Deepdale has to offer,” said Tanya. “The countryside on the north Norfolk coast is distinctly different to the Abruzzo area of Italy I usually guide around, Abruzzo is mountainous!”

Jason Borthwick, partner of the business, said, “It’s great to have such a passionate person on our team this winter. Although the wilds of the north Norfolk coast are somewhat different to the Italian countryside Tanya is used to, our wildlife and the beauty of this area competes with anywhere in the world.”

Walkers interested in joining Tanya on 8th January, 26th January or 12th February should book their place in advance by phoning Deepdale Information on Tel: 01485 210256.

Alternatively if walkers would like to stay at Deepdale before or after their walk they are best to book online at www.deepdalebackpackers.co.uk

The choice of accommodation Deepdale has to offer includes private ensuite rooms, tipis, camping and dorm beds. Facilities include a fully equipped kitchen for the hostel, visitor information centre and Dalegate Market, which is home to Deepdale Café and many other shops.

Natural Friends

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

A few lines borrowed, with great respect, from the pen of the American poet, Ralph Waldo Emerson, serve to inspire all who will be alone and lonely this Christmas.

To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.

Whatever your personal circumstances might be, there is someone out there that needs YOU. Seek and you might just find them.

Succeed with Natural-Friends – your journey starts here . . . www.natural-friends.com

New Look Veggie Vision

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

Veggie Vision launch a new look for National Vegan Month and Christmas Without Cruelty

When Karin Ridgers was told a vegetarian and vegan TV programme was “too ahead of its time” and “too niche”, Karin decided to produce her own internet TV station and VeggieVision.TV was born.

The pilot was a great success not only with viewers tuning in but also filming for VeggieVision from all over the world. And despite having to wait for technology to catch up her idea VeggieVision is really moving forward with a super new look being launched this week with the wonderful support of Ket from Spirit Quest

VeggieVision will be at the coming Animal Aid Christmas Without Cruelty event and is going to be filming real people who want to share with the world why they went vegetarian and vegan.

Although all products and information is veggie friendly many of the
viewers are not vegetarian – they may simply be interested in healthier
options. We make short programmes with the aim that they will be
suitable for non veggies too.

VeggieVision also has the Free Guide to Surviving a Veggie Christmas which is packed with tips and advice from real vegetarians and will be available later this week.

We are supporters of Ethical Junction and look forward to doing much more with the team there too.

Passionate about healthy eating and carbon footprints VeggieVision is
now looking for new presenters as well as people who would like to send
in their own video content.

You can sign up by going to www.veggievision.co.uk and receive updates, information and a chance to win some super goodies.

Editorial: Changes

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

A personal introduction from the new editor

Listening to the radio this morning I got a blast from the past, with a novel twist, when I heard David Bowie’s Changes for the first time in years. The twist was hearing a couple of lines as if for the first time, with whole new meaning, despite having heard the song 50 times or more. Here’s the lines . . .

And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They’re quite aware of what they’re going through

I can’t say what Bowie was actually thinking but I felt an absolute sense of identification and, better still, joy when those words radiated through the thick morning cloud of my bunged-up, work-stuffed and just-another-wet-Wednesday head.

Here I am, editor of Pulse, the ultimate news service for the ethical sector, the sector that’s changing Britain and, glocally speaking, the world. I’m also editor of Sustained magazine which recently doubled its distribution. The feedback coming from the experts is fantastic – ‘the magazine for the 21st Century’ and ‘the most important magazine in the sector along with the Ecologist.’

And it’s all in vogue now isn’t it – this changing thing – no more the alternative, underground fringe. We’re the new mainstream. Not so long ago we were the children who were spat on – ‘commies’, ‘malcontents’, ‘dreamers’, ‘drifters’, ‘wasters’, ‘parasites’, ‘hippys’, ‘tree-huggers’, ‘new-age loonies’, ‘lefties’, ‘women’s libbers’, ‘bleeding heart liberals’ and so on but now the society that reviled us is not just beginning to accept us – it’s starting to follow!

Unfortunately it’s taken the likes of the findings of the Stern report to kick them into action and no doubt many still begrudge us, whilst many others are going with the change just for their own gain. But the feet-draggers, grumblers, reactionaries, incurably cycnical, dim-wit, greedy, selfish, ignorant, lazy, myopic muppets are on the run and, if there’s still enough time, the day will be ours.

So, take a moment now to think on all the changes of recent decades and your part in them – even if it’s just the small part (but infinitely essential one) of being that little bit more conscious, considerate and compassionate. Think of those you know who are working toward the same vision as you, and think of all your fellow members and supporters of Ethical Junction, and the entire ethical community, who are working now, today, and will be tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow toward that same vision. Take this moment to quietly celebrate yourselves and your achievements, and to feel the warm glow of satisfaction spread through your whole being.

Does that feel good?

Good.

Now get back to work. There’s a world to save and we haven’t got all day you know!
