New Eco-Directory BOOK OF GREEN makes green living easy

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Appearing
this month on the shelves in WH Smith and Borders nationwide, new eco-living
directory BOOK OF GREEN is the most comprehensive guide for everybody to
genuinely and easily green their lifestyles.

With
the general public currently becoming more receptive to living a more
eco-friendly life, this completely free guide points the consumer in the right
direction – it includes hundreds of approved ethical providers in a wide range
of sectors including business services, health and beauty, home and garden,
green energy, travel, parenting and food & drink.  All the companies
in the directory are in some way mostly or completely environmentally friendly,
sustainable, fair trade, organic,  ethical and socially responsible.

Book
of Green is intended to show everybody how to easily reduce their carbon
footprint, live a healthy lifestyle and make  a personal positive
impact on the environment by integrating truly ethical products and services
into their daily home and family lives.

With
an initial print run of 30,000, the guide comes in a handy A5 format and is
printed in vegetable inks on 100% recycled paper.  An online flip magazine
version is also available at www.bookofgreen.com
Book of Green will be available in WH Smiths this July, attached to the
front of Permaculture Magazine as well as distributed across the UK in high
street eco stores, online eco stores, and at events during the summer as well
as at the Eden Project and the Kent Eco Village, the Kent Show by The
Ecologist, July 17-19.

Book
of Green is co-founded by Sue Jueno (founder of Allthingseco) and Katie Keegan
(founder of One Green Earth),
whose combined experience of 6 years in the eco/ethical business arena
has given them the experience, knowledge and contacts to create a guide for
green living which everybody can trust.

“Being
green is more than reducing the threat of climate change, it’s also about
ethical trading and personal health.  The companies found within Book of
Green provide solutions across all sectors through their products &
services to help build a positive foundation for your family’s future
generations,”  says Katie Keegan.

“With
credit crunch in mind and a passion for promoting green shoot businesses we
have made Book of Green extremely affordable to advertisers and free to the
public to show off exceptional companies that are solving environmental
problems and that will be leading us into the future,” says Sue Jueno.

Book Review: The Transition Timeline by Shaun Chamberlin

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Shaun Chamberlin’s new book ‘The Transition Timeline’ is about as
important as any I’ve read.  It should take the momentum of the
Transition movement and, if there’s any justice, will catapult it
forward.

There is so much information coming out on an almost daily basis about
the state of the planet, and to a lesser extent, the fragile nature of
our future energy supplies, that it is easy to become bewildered.  In
‘The Transition Timeline’ Shaun has gathered all the key data together
and he presents a coherent and alarming analysis.  It is easily the
best discussion I have read about the tensions between peak oil and
climate change policy and he shows that a radical shift in approach is
vital.  That shift is at the heart of the Transition vision.

The
book has been described as the history of the next twenty years.  It
examines four scenarios for the future and what the implications are.
The Transition scenario shows the positive and exciting challenges that
adopting it will give us – the others including what we are doing now,
will fail us.  And just as The Transition Handbook inspired me to begin
to do things differently Shaun’s book has done the same.

Of
course the information is grim.  We know now that the indicators of
global warming are all following the ‘worst case’ predictions made by
the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.  And we know that the
most common reaction from people is to adopt the Ostrich position.  But
this is a call to arms written with passion and conviction containing a
whole series of innovative ideas on what to do.  The beauty of
Transition for me is, as Shaun points out in his book, that it is on a
human scale.  That’s the level we all work at.  We can see value in
planting a tree or getting together a community food coop and with its
rate of growth the actions taken by ‘transitioners’ can be a new,
positive tipping point.  As one quote in the book goes “imagine waking
up one morning and finding you’re in the majority!”

The Transition Timeline is a tool for changing the world I fervently hope you will use it and encourage others to do the same.

The Transition Timeline is published by Green Books at £12.95.

Ethical modelling agency seeks new faces for 2009

Flame teams up with Aveda to find real models for ethical fashion

This January 25th Flame modelling and talent agency is holding a Make up, Styling and Professional Photo Shoot at the Aveda Institute Spa in Covent Garden.

The workshop is aimed at aspiring models and will provide an opportunity to experience a real photo shoot.

Aveda’s professional make up and hair artists will make over the young women and men who will then be styled by Flame in the latest ethical fashions, followed by a professional photo shoot for their portfolios. The event will be filmed and highlights will be available to watch on the New Me TV online magazine.

Flame was set up in 2008 by Film Financing Executive, Mary Booth and Fashion Stylist, Lupe Castro, to oppose industry standards and demonstrate that real women and men can succeed as fashion models. Native New Yorker, Mary, is the creative genius behind the web TV drama Undercover Girl and has worked on several blockbuster films including, Bend It Like Beckham, Cold Mountain and Casino Royale. Lupe Castro is a fashion stylist who has worked with top designers and models and is looking to highlight the need for the fashion industry to adapt a more ethical view of modelling.

Strong ethical beliefs are at the heart of Flame with regards to the environment, from eco ways to travel to cruelty-free beauty and hair products and more. The philosophy also includes a broader range of ethnicity and age, identifying and creating opportunities for everyone. Already on their books is Leanne Nagel who rose to fame in the fourth series of Britain’s Next Top Model.

Flame also operates a strict No Size Zero Policy believing that models should be a fair and accurate representation of society today. Flame aims of change the face of modelling by giving opportunities to today’s talented young men and women to find out what it feels like to be a model and fulfil their dreams.

Come along and enjoy the experience?

The date for this year is Sunday 5 October from 10am – 5pm. in the Market Hall, Abergavenny. We have backing from Fairtrade Wales as well as local businesses and Abergavenny Council. There will be plenty of local and regional press coverage as well as BBC Wales.

Last year saw a huge attendance and we will increase this year. Stalls last year included – Love Zimbabwe, Goodies from the Gambia, Bag- Age, Bryn – y – Cwm project, Smouldering Sage,Biltong 2 U,Tropical Forest, Fairtrade Abergavenny & Crickhowell, Tools for self reliance, VSO, etc.

We also had fantastic catering from Scrumptious catering and Taste Zimbabwe. We will be having the Fairtrade fashion show again and the drumming workshop from Dave Roberts. Also, hopefully the amazing Chrys Blanchard and Abercapella. We have a school group performing African Dance and hope to be bringing over from Zimbabwe Sam Mtukudzi son of Oliver (Tuku) the most well known Zimbabwean artiste.

There will be a childrens area this year with face painting and a bouncy castle. Music and entertainment will be going on all day and there will be lots more to announce as we get nearer to the date. I realise that it is still relatively early, but it would help us enourmously if those who are interested in taking a stall this year could let me know as soon as possible. Looking forward to seeing you all in October.

Kind Regards,
David and Martha Holman.
