Whay use recycled paper?

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

Why use Recycled paper?

What is FSC?

OK,

FSC (Forestry Standard Council) is a body that monitors the responsible management of wood.

It offers a certification and accreditation to ensure that wood and paper derives from a sustainable source so that consumers can be confident they are not contributing to deforestation. Please see http://www.fsc-uk.org/

for more information on the body.

The main thing to know about FSC is that in regards to the paper industry they also offer accreditation to recycled papers – you can get FSC 100% recycled paper for example.

You can also get FSC 100% virgin paper as well – the pulp comes from managed and monitored woodland.

I think what you really want to know is why go for recycled when you can go for an FSC certified product that is made from virgin fibre – so the real question is why use recycled stock?

Well…

Most print companies use FSC and claim to be ‘green’ as a result

Using recycled stock

shows that you are actually ‘green’

Evidence…

Please find a conclusion from an ethical print information site :

‘WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) has commissioned the most exhaustive life cycle analysis ever undertaken, to inform this debate.

Energy: The report identified an average of 50% less energy consumption when recycling instead of incinerating paper and cardboard over the entire life-cycle. In other words, on average, virgin fibre production followed by incineration with energy recovery, consumed twice as much energy as recycling.

Carbon: As one of the most commonly raised impact categories, and of increasing importance, the report identified a clear carbon saving for recycled paper versus virgin paper.’

So… less carbon is used and less energy meaning that using a recycled paper (FSC or not) is more environmentally friendly than just an FSC virgin paper.

Our Papers

We use the following papers:

100% recycled paper

100% recycled card

80% recycled gloss

75% recycled satin

100% recycled silk

For full colour litho printing we use vegetable based inks which reduces the use of harmful chemicals and does not use a finite resource such as petroleum based oil inks.

Our digital printer uses inks derived from organic based as opposed to chemical based polymers

At Eco Print we are proud to be offering a truly ‘green’ alternative for all your printing needs.

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

Handled With Care 2010 – National Coffin Exhibition

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

If you’re curious about coffins or fascinated by funerals – then a national exhibition being held this weekend should suit you down to the ground.

With personalised funerals now increasingly fashionable, the National Coffin Exhibition ‘Handled With Care’ will showcase the vast array of options now available – from eco-friendly hand crafted coffins through traditional hardwoods and brightly coloured ‘picture’ coffins.

The exhibition – on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 July 2010 – is being organised by the British Institute of Funeral Directors (BIFD) and will be held at Chiltern Woodland Burial Park near Beaconsfield, Bucks – the UK’s largest mature woodland cemetery.

“Traditionally, funerals really are a taboo subject and we want to break down the barriers that prevent people from making practical plans, while they’re still very much alive and well,” explained organiser Colin Liddell, of the BIFD.

“After all, your funeral is your final public appearance, so why not make a lasting impression by having the send off you’d really like, rather than leaving it down to others to make all the decisions?” he added.

Woodland Burial Park Manager Fran Hall said that personalised funerals and non-traditional coffins were growing in popularity:

“We don’t live identikit lives so why should we have identikit funerals?  Families find great comfort in being able to personalise funerals and this event is all about making people more aware of the choices that are available.”

As well as being able to meet coffin designers and producers, visitors will also be ‘ask a funeral director’, view funeral memorabilia and take carriage rides through the 72-acre woodland.

Coffins on display will include those made from recycled newspaper, hand-woven willow, wool, hardwood, bamboo, traditional timber and over-printed board – including a topical soccer themed model for football fans – perfect for World Cup Final Day.

“Increasingly people want funerals to be a celebration of life and the choice of coffin is often the starting point for a very individual and meaningful funeral service.  This will be the biggest collection of coffins on show to the public in the country,” added Colin Liddell.

Handled With Care 2010 follows on from the success of an event held in Newcastle in 2003, which attracted over 1300 people.  The event is open both days from 10am to 4pm and entry is free. For directions to Chiltern Woodland Burial Park, visit the website www.woodlandburialparks.co.uk

Anita Roddick, Keith Floyd, Lynn Redgrave and Wendy Richards are among high profile personalities to have chosen alternative coffins.

A bike is for life, not just for Xmas

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

At this time of excess and over-consumption, 1 Less Car are reminding everyone wanting to buy a bike for Xmas that there are plenty of good quality recycled bikes repaired by qualified mechanics, and sold at a reasonable price by not-for –profit social enterprises-Bike recycling projects are growing nationally, and 1 Less Car say that not enough people know about  them.

To find your nearest Bike Recycling Project you can go to 1 Less Car’s unique Bike Recycling Projects Web Page which has a map, and up to date details of all known bike recycling projects in the UK. It can be found at:   www.1lesscar.org.uk\Bikerecycling.htm

Easy to use, the page includes a map showing projects nationwide and up to date links and information to every project. It is hoped that this will make it much quicker to find a bike recycling project near you.  It will be updated regularly, as many such projects come and go quickly.

John McArthur, from 1 Less Car, comments:

“With hundreds of thousands of bikes going to waste every year, we really need to coordinate so that people can get a good quality reconditioned, recycled bike from a project near them. Most of the Projects are not-for–profit and/or social enterprise schemes providing training –often with uncertain funding- so it’s important they are supported. Also, many new bikes you buy are ridiculously cheap, but the price we all pay is that many of them are put together by workers with very few rights. At least if you buy one form a Bike Recycling project, you’re supporting something where workers at least get relatively decent wages and conditions.”

What they’re saying about the Web Page.

Just two quotes from the many positive messages about the Page…

London Cycling Campaign:

“This is a great resource- London Cycling Campaign receive lots of calls from people wanting to donate old or disused bikes to a worthy cause so now we can point them to an up-to-date directory.  And we can let people know where to access quality, affordable refurbished bikes, which means even more people will be cycling. Fantastic!”

Rosie Tharp

Community Cycling Officer, London Cycling Campaign

Oxford Cycle workshop:

“It’s been really exciting to see 1lesscar grow to become the focal point of information for people looking for projects working to recycle bikes. This database couldn’t be more timely, with the growing demand for ethically sourced products that promote sustainable living whilst being friendly on your pocket.

Here in Oxford we recycle over one thousand bicycles destined for landfill every year and I hope the interest this database creates will not only generate interest in the bicycles these projects sell but also more support from the communities they are often at the heart of. Recycling bicycles is a very labour intensive task and the projects that are out there work hard to make a difference within their communities, often working with disengaged groups  that lack alternative curriculum activities to act as a vehicle for teaching life  skills and offering individuals genuine vocational prospects. I warmly welcome every initiative that will bring the work these organisations do to a broader audience.”

Dan Harris

Founding Co-op Member of Oxford Cycle Workshop

Appeal for more information.

Having had many enquiries about bike recycling, 1 Less Car became aware of the need for an up-to-date accessible site.  They are certain, from the feedback they have had, that there are many more that are not publicised nationally.

So as well as using the Site, they are asking that if you know of any other projects that are not included, to let them know at info@1lesscar.org.uk. 1 Less Car are certain, from the feedback they have had, that there are many more that are not publicised nationally.

If anyone can come up with a Project, they will receive a complementary 1Less car High Visibility jacket.
