Rethinking Finance with Ann Pettifor, Hazel Henderson and Tessa Tennant

Friday, June 10th, 2011

What are the credible alternative to the existing financial system?

Financial markets, we are told, are the lifeblood of our society, which is why governments across the globe have gone to such enormous lengths to prop up failing financial institutions. However is the economic crisis really over? Is the ‘business as usual’ mentality destined to produce more of the same instability? What plausible alternatives to the current system are there that would promote employment, social and environmental equality, whilst ensuring the economic stability we require?

Bringing together some of the leading voices in alternative economics including Ann Pettifor, Hazel Henderson, Tessa Tennant, Julie Richardson and Nathalie Buschor. This course will cover macroeconomics as well as the experiences of those working with money and investments on a daily basis. The course will uncover the myths and flaws that surround the current banking system, before drawing on the wide range of ideas and experience to explore how a new economic dawn could really lead to a fairer robust system that supports and serves the interests of communities and ecosystems.

Ann Pettifor recently featured in The Observer magazine as one of six pioneers in green thinking. Her work and writing has concentrated on the international financial architecture, the sovereign debts of the poorest countries, and the rise in sovereign, corporate and private debt in OECD economies. She is well known for her leadership of Jubilee 2000, an organisation that placed the debts of the poorest countries on the global political agenda, and brought about both substantial debt cancellation, and radical policy changes at national and international levels.

Hazel Henderson is a world renowned futurist, evolutionary economist, a worldwide syndicated columnist, consultant on sustainable development, and author of Beyond Globalization, and seven other books. She sits on several editorial boards, including Futures Research Quarterly, The State of the Future Report, and E/The Environmental Magazine (USA), Resurgence and Futures (UK).

Tessa Tennant is Executive Chair of The Ice Organisation myice.com, an environmental rewards programme. Tessa co-founded the UK’s first equity investment fund for sustainable development in 1988, the Merlin (now Jupiter) Ecology Fund. She was Chair and co-founder of the UK Social Investment Forum uksif.org and of the Carbon Disclosure Project cdproject.net where she is now a Trustee.

Learn to enhance your creativity from a Whitbread winning author

Friday, May 6th, 2011

What do we mean by Creativity and what is the nature of Imagination? How do they relate to the fruitful processes of the natural world, and are there fresh ways in which we can activate their energy in our life and work?

Lindsay Clarke, Whitbread Prize winner and author of The Chymical Wedding, will help illuminate the deep ground of our creativity in the personal, collective and ecological layers of the unconscious mind. Lindsay is joined by John Moat, painter and a poet, whose work embodies the search for integration and balance and Roselle Angwin a celebrated Westcountry poet and author, she will use a trip to Dartmoor to discuss the connections between creativity, consciousness and the environment.

Through a varied range of stimulating activities, group discussions and reflections on the poetics of experience, the wisdom of dreams, and the roles of muses, the course will help participants to develop areas of their own creativity and strengthen their vision and practice.

  • Discover and enhance new aspects of your creativity.
  • Learn from established writers and artists about their own creative journeys and processes.
  • Develop your understanding of the inter-play between imagination and the unconscious.

Bio-Inspired Design

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Over countless millennia, nature has developed some of the most inspiring and sustainable solutions to a multitude of different problems. Bio-design is a compelling and inspiring method of both seeing and doing for problem-solvers of every discipline, and can be a powerful tool for promoting sustainability.

More and more often science and the private sector are turning to design inspired nature. Possibly one of the most obvious architectural examples are the Eden Projects ‘biomes’ which were inspired by soap bubbles consequently an incredibly efficient structural form that has one hundredth of the weight of a glass solution. The result is one of the lightest structures ever created and a building that is largely self-heating using passive solar design principles.

Participants on these dynamic course will be presented with a fresh design lens by looking at the natural world. They will be offered dynamic examples of successful applications of biomimetic innovation from a surprising range of professions, including: architecture, product design and medicine. Participants will practice techniques for discovery, analysis, ideation and implementation of creative solutions using experimental, problem solving and team based learning.

How Would Nature Do That? Bio-Inspired Design, taught by Tom McKeag runs from June 13 – 17, 2011 followed by

Biomimicry and Buildings: Innovation and Sustainability in Architecture taught by Michael Pawlyn and Robert Somerville runs from June 20 – 24, 2011

The Road Ahead: Building Community in the Long Emergency

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

June 27 – July 2, 2011 with David W. Orr, Stephan Mayer & Rob Hopkins.

Human history has entered “the long emergency” driven by climate destabilisation, the end of cheap fossil fuels, economic uncertainty, inequality, and increasing political turmoil. Governments virtually everywhere seem incapable of responses that are appropriate to the scale of the challenge. What’s to be done?

That question, of course, has no single answer. Responses to the long emergency will depend on varying situations and circumstances, different blends of culture and ecology, and local capacities for creativity and adaptability. But this course will focus on what communities can do to create maximum resilience and sustainability in a time of rapid change and instability.
