Since 1929 Mellau have been manufacturing natural flooring at its factory in the town of Mellau Austria. Our raw material is from plantations in East Africa using the finest organic sisal. We offer our products without a latex backing making it truly environmentally friendly.
NATURAL ORGANIC SISAL UNBACKED RUGS
Latex is frequently used for carpet backing, especially natural carpets like sisal. Sisal is environmentally friendly, however as the carpet or rug gets older the backing brakes down realising a powder, which then can become harmful. The solution is to get a natural fibre carpet like sisal but without any backing (unbacked). The largest manufacturer of unbacked natural carpets used to be Curragh Tintawn Carpets, however they stopped manufacturing this kind of carpet some 30 years ago. Mellau-sisal still manufactures unbacked natural carpets in the town of Mellau in Austria and will ship worldwide.

Ethical and Environmental Policy
Mellau manufacture sisal flooring to the highest ethical standards by sourcing the raw materials from established plantations in East Africa where the welfare of the workforce is cared for and looked after by providing schools and healthcare amongst other benefits. Manufacturing is carried out in our factory in Austria to high ethical standards by a skilled workforce, in compliance with Eco-Tex Standard 100.
