Salcombe Sailing Days

Thought about trying sailing but don’t want to go on a ‘course’ crammed in with people you don’t know? Then come sailing with us aboard Tinushi, a 32 foot sailing yacht based at Salcombe in South Devon. Tinushi is yours. You choose who you want to share her with. Experience the amazing pollution free, carbon neutral world of sailing. In today’s world of rising emissions sailing is the ultimate guilt free holiday; moving through the ocean powered only by the wind. Sit back and enjoy the peace and serenity of sailing, the wonderful feeling of being completely at one with nature. The wind dictates our direction and speed. So slow down, switch off the phone, listen to the seabirds, look out for dolphins and feel the wind in your hair. This is THE holiday experience for the 21st century, just you, the wind and the sea. You can sail for half a day, a whole day, or for longer if you wish. Sleep and eat on board the yacht or stay ashore and be picked up every morning. We’ll sort out dates and times to suit you. Jon Clift, the skipper and cook, will look after both you and the boat. He has sailed the Atlantic Ocean three times as well as being an RNLI lifeboat crewmember and helmsman. You’ll be in good hands. In keeping with Tinushi’s remit of touching the earth lightly this is a vegetarian boat, using as much locally produced food as possible.

Ethical and Environmental Policy

We conceived and created Salcombe Sailing Days because sailing is a powerful carbon free experience and we wanted to introduce many more people to this wonderful means of travelling and living. We are committed to the highest standards of sustainable tourism.
Our yacht ‘Tinushi’ was built in 1981 and has recently been extensively refurbished by ourselves. Her prime means of propulsion is wind power, although we do have a small diesel engine to use when the wind doesn’t blow and to manoeuvre in and out of small harbours.
Food - Tinushi is a vegetarian boat, with all food being organic and locally produced wherever possible. Our teas and coffees are fair trade. Jon makes all the bread and Debbie, Jon’s wife, all the cakes.
Water - All our fresh water is carried aboard it is a finite amount. We actively encourage minimising it’s consumption.
Travelling to & from Salcombe – The majority of our trips start and finish at Salcombe which is served by excellent public transport. We are a short distance from the main line train station of Totnes with regular bus links to Salcombe.
Anchoring – we are very aware of the harm that can be caused by anchoring in inappropriate places, particularly on eelgrass beds and do not anchor in any place that might cause harm
Wildlife – Sailing is one of those great travelling modes that cause no impact to wildlife. Indeed we frequently are escorted by both common and bottlenose dolphins when sailing, with gannets and terns almost constant companions.
Carbon Emissions. - We think we probably are the lowest emitter of carbon, per person, per mile travelled, of any UK adventure travel company.
Cleaners - We use biodegradable chemicals cleaners and refill containers where possible.
A ‘paperless office’ - The vast majority of our communication is by email with no unnecessary printing. We endeavour to be a ‘paperless office’.
