Suberstyle's range of products is ecological, sustainable and entirely animal-free. Our handbags, wallets, purses, belts and other accessories are hand-crafted from premium cork textile in Portugal's Alentejo region, the world's foremost cork production area. Cork textile is the perfect alternative to leather as it is natural, hardwearing, waterproof, beautiful and very easy to maintain. It is used to make wallets, handbags, purses, belts, umbrellas and many other useful accessories. Cork is harvested from the cork oak (Quercus Suber) every seven to nine years and this process leaves the tree unharmed and able to produce cork over and over again. Cork oak forests in Portugal are the basis for a vast and rich wildlife habitat that is under threat due to reduced demand for cork from the wine industry, which has recently swung towards using alternative stoppers for its bottles.
Ethical and Environmental Policy
Suberstyle was set up in order to promote increased use of a premium natural and renewable resource: cork. The cork for our products is harvested, crafted and sourced within the small geographical area of Portugal's Alentejo region. The use of cork in our products promotes sustainable land use practices and preserves the ancient landscape of Portugal's cork oak forests and the flora and fauna that are dependent upon it. These alternative uses for cork encourage land owners to continue producing cork rather than opting to plant non-native eucalyptus or other cash crops, which reduce native wildlife habitats and make the landscape prone to wildfires. The products are all made by small-local producers in areas of Portugal's interior in which there are few job opportunities.
