The By Hand fair trade shop is a family-run fair trade organisation that aims to promote the beautiful fair trade jewellery, ethical gifts, eco-friendly bags and other handicrafts produced by the highly talented craftsmen and women on the islands of Bali and Java.
Based in York, By Hand works closely with producers in Bali and Java to help them develop their businesses. By importing their products to the UK, By Hand provides a much-needed market to the marginalised producers in small communities in Indonesia.
By Hand is committed to fair trade and ethical principles and is an accredited member of the British Association for Fair Trade Shops. By Hand believes that beautiful products should not come at the cost of exploitation and actively promotes fair trade practices, both in Indonesia and here in the UK. Furthermore, By Hand is committed to running a sustainable and environmentally friendly business. Products are imported by boat to keep the impact on the environment to a minimum (= less emissions than driving a car for a few miles) and are sent to customers in recycled or eco-friendly packaging.

We are committed to fair trade principles and By Hand has recently become an accredited member of the British Association for Fair Trade Shops. We work closely with Arum Dalu Mekar - a fa
ir trade organisation in Bali with World Fair Trade Organisation (formerly IFAT) membership - to ensure that our producers are treated in such a way that their work is rewarded with the payment that it deserves.
Arum Dalu Mekar helps to raise environmental awareness amongst the producers in Bali and is currently developing a range of recycled products. Meanwhile, here at By Hand we are also committed to minimising our impact on the environment. The paper and packaging that we use is sourced from within the UK and is either recycled or derived from sustainable resources.
Beautiful products should not come at the cost of exploitation.
