Cadwyn provides natural, handmade Fair Trade Products. Our concept of Fair Trade stems from our respect for and friendship with the groups of crafts people in North and West Africa who produce many of the goods. The name of our company - Cadwyn - is in fact a Welsh word meaning a 'chain' or 'link' and it is our aim to act as a link between the UK customer and the cooperatives in Africa.
Ethical and Environmental Policy
Cadwyn was set up as a cooperative in rural Wales in the 1970's to promote the products of Welsh craft industries. By the end of the 1980's, Cadwyn began to work also with groups of crafts people in the developing countries of north and west Africa.
Our company was set up by people involved in campaigning to secure a future for Welsh-speaking communities and for Wales to take it's place among the nations of the world and make direct contact with other peoples. Cadwyn have two basic aims which underpin all our activities:
- To promote opportunities for crafts people in Wales and the developing world to earn a livelihood and thereby strengthen the economic base of these communities.
- To organise our work in such a way that those involved with the company have time to take part in campaigns for free communities as opposed to worshipping the "free" market.
FAIR TRADE
We have a very personal view of Fair Trade. Our concept of Fair Trade stems from our respect for and friendship with the groups of crafts people in North and West Africa who produce many of the goods. As we know these artisans and count them as personal friends it is important to us to ensure that they get a fair price for their goods, and the orders mean a great deal to them and their communities.
We deal directly with these cooperatives and we can therefore ensure the fairest possible prices for our customers which in turn means more sales for the artisans. All sustainable agreements must always be beneficial for all parties concerned.
The name of our company - Cadwyn - is in fact a Welsh word meaning a 'chain' or 'link' and it is our aim through this website to act as a link between you and the cooperatives in Africa who produce these lovely Fair Trade Gifts. Cadwyn is recognised by the British Association for FairTrade Shops (BAFTS) as a Fair Trade Importer.
