Canopy and Stars

Canopy & Stars is the latest thing to come out of Sawday's, a Bristol based company that specialises in the special. For over a decade we've been seeking out and bringing people exceptional B&Bs, hotels, pubs and self-catering places to stay. Canopy & Stars has grown out of founder Alastair Sawday’s childhood obsession with climbing trees and building treehouses. He claims to have made one that had running water and a sofa, but no photos have yet been seen. So we set about thinking how we could give everyone the feeling of excitement and adventure that came from camping, but with a little touch of what we love at Sawday's. We came up with this - our ever growing collection of luxury camping and glamping places.

What we look for

We treasure beautiful places to stay, the simple things in life and the chance to slow down. That's what we look for in our places. We believe that you can live and work in a sustainable, responsible way without having to compromise on fun, excitement, or even luxury. We work with suppliers and builders who share our principles and encourage our guests to travel as greenly as possible through our growing partnership with Sustrans, the sustainable travel charity. Our owners are people with creativity, skill and a passion for what they do.

Getting out there

We actually go out and visit all the luxury camping sites on Canopy & Stars. Not just to make sure that they're lovely, but also to give us a chance to meet the owners and learn a little bit about the area that we can then pass on to our guests. It all helps in building the sort of relationships that benefit everyone and make the site work the way it does.

The office

The office at Long Ashton

To prove that we practice what we preach, our office was refitted with super-insulation, a wood-pellet boiler, a rainwater tank, solar panels, low energy lighting, Herdwick sheep carpet tiles and a rescued partridge in an organic, fair trade pear tree. We do our best to run completely without paper (no glossy brochures), have a car sharing scheme, an allotment and, finally, some pigs across the road. Myfanwy and Megpeg (pictured above) recently relocated to the The Community Farm in Bristol but there are some new Berkshire pigs who get the pick of any leftovers from the office.
