Ethical and Environmental Policy

The Conscious Consumer was born from a burning desire to build a new vision of trade; I wanted to do things differently, key practices I incorporate in my business is sustainability, longevity and respect.

The seed was sown when I was studying a MA in Gender Studies. Further roots where formed when I worked for Oxfam, discovering the values of Fairtrade that were then underpinned with the Make Poverty History Campaign. With the concept that to empower women we need to increase their status and self-esteem in a sustainable way, the Conscious Consumer was born...it is part of the business ethos to assist women to achieve economic independence and alleviate poverty at grass roots level.

This is done through product selection, information sharing with customers, presentations and regulation of my suppliers. Part of the core values of the business is recognising the importance to respect the people we directly and indirectly work with but also to respect the planet. Taking care of the small things for example using recycled or recyclable packaging, paper from sustainable sources or recycled, and actively seeking stock that is from either sustainable materials, organic or recycled. And always learning from other ethical businesses and organisations on best practice and positive solutions to getting the balance of business and social responsibility right.

I actively take part in Green and Ethical events supporting and promoting awareness of the issues that the business is trying to address. I also sponsor charities through my business and have fundraising events to promote the charities that I support on an ongoing basis. Building long-term relationships with my suppliers and charities as an integral part of sustainability. I currently do not have an employees but a supportive family, who understand my passion and drive to make Ethical shopping the norm. My website is a new addition to The Conscious Consumer and I am slowly up-dating and filling it with lots of information and resources to help consumers make an ethical choice the easy choice.

I would like to think that I am an ambassador for sustainable business and able to co-ordinate and implement the core values of an ethical business.
