We demonstrate care for the environment by providing a practical choice. For example the Standby Saving devices are a practical solution to a known problem. Although the best solution is just to turn them off at the plug, if people don't want to or can't do that then here is an option. It also gives information and helps people think about being responsible. We support fair and sustainable trading practices by carefully selecting products and providing relevant information and as many alternatives as possible. The natural hair dye range is a good example of a product that is produced ethically and provides an alternative that is not readily available on the high street. Surya the manufacturers have many great programmes to help the people, in a non condacending manner, that work to produce it. The whole ethic of ecohamster is to provide an alternative, it would be so much easier not to have an ethical stance and make more money. I don't believe ecohamster will chage the world but it in a small way provides information and something to think about as well as practical solutions to help other people start a difficult journey into being more environmentally aware. At the moment ecohamster is very small and as such hasn't had the opportunity to exploit any workers. As it grows it is part of the business plan to let future employees to become part of the business by being a social enterprise. That way there efforts are rewarded in a real sense. Again, using the example of Surya as supplier of hair dyes - their commitment to their workers is enlightened and makes us proud to be associated with their product. Again, with regards to equal opportunity and discrimination. The company is too small for this to have been considered. As the owner I am pleased to say that I can directly influence equality. Social responsibilty is the backbone of why ecohamster exists. It retails products and provides information on a growing range of environmental and sustainability issues. It is also pragmatic and understands that not everyone wants to jump in feet first. So buying products that don't solve the problem as such, but help give understanding of the problem and encourage people to buy even better in the future is a worthwhile aim.
